Stephens was stone wall pen IMO

Goal had to be disallowed as he was interfering with play.

No angle to show ball was out. Unlike vs Man U when it was about 2 feet out.

I agitated by the VAR looking to see if Maupay had put the ball over the line, didn’t take a look at Man Utd’s goal against us and Spurs has a similar goal against with the ball over the line.

I thought well that’s typical leave the big boys alone with scrutiny placed on little old Brighton. It really does need to be consistent.

Rodriguez knew Stephens was behind him, so hooked his foot around Stephen’s leg, knowing they’d both fall forwards.

Disallowed goal, player offside was interfering with play.

MOTD showed a graphic which had a vertical line proving the whole of the ball didn’t cross the line.

Totally! Rodriguez was so looking for it the ref wasn't fooled. All good decisions IMHO.

Stephens was a stonewall penalty, wrong side of attacker and knocks him over. I was very surprised when that wasn't given.

Stephens push was standard "Umpires Call" and shows the lunacy of VAR on penalty decisions and the absolute requirements for refs to use the screens so the VAR aren't worried about making their mate look stupid.
Connolly goal should have VAR nowhere near it and rely solely on the officials. Until you get goal line technology on all pitch perimeters then most calls will be guesswork.
Disallowed goal is offside in every interpretation I have seen over the years. The player's role was solely to block off Ryan and there was even an argument for it being a foul for obstruction, not just offside.

For me, the way forward is simple. No stupid lines - just a couple of naked eye looks. If you want to go linesman's call like cricket then fine. Penalties that look like wrong decisions should always go to the ref on the monitors. Same for red cards. The quest for perfect decisions has actually ended up with shocking decisions made WITH technology. Stop trying to be perfect and just be consistent. Or, and this is my new campaign slogan, BURN IT WITH FIRE.

Yep -all SPOT on, IMO.

I hate the contrived 'VAR CONTROVERSY!!!' all the time. In this match the VAR checks worked EXACTLY as they are supposed to, within the guidelines set out.

If Burnley have any complaint, it should be directed at John Moss for deciding the Rodriguez incident was not a penalty - not the VAR ref.

Stephens Pen was the only one that looked dodgy.

In real time I thought it was a penalty. On seeing the replay from behind, it still looked a penalty, but more in the "seen them given" territory.
Therefore it scrapes through on the clear and obvious for me.
A similar call was made against Lamptey so it evened out.

On the subject of VAR, Mr Dean seems to be the topic of conversation this morning regarding his facial expression after VAR gave a penalty to Arsenal. He seemed to think it wasn't a penalty. Surely he should have gone to the pitchside screen or does VAR have the final say.

On a side note.

20 penalties for United this season.

20!

Haven't seen them all so couldn't comment on the validity of the decisions.
But that is an extraordinary amount.

Right up to the point you saw it from behind the goal.

My feelings were:-

Penalty.
Penalty
Penalty
That's never a penalty.
Penalty.

From behind the goal you could almost make a case for a free kick to Stephens.

Rodriguez very clearly stepped across Stephens in order to con the penalty.

It's the sort of decision for VAR, as it could easily be given, only for MOTD, some 5 hours later, to say he faked it.

Yes agree with this, only to say the penalty appeal could have been given but would add Rodriguez stopped running meaning Stephens naturally run into the back of him. On the offside it is totally irrelevant if Ryan could get the ball or not the Burnley player was in an offside position and interfering with play so rightly given.

I actually thought it would be given, but I think Rodriguez deliberately ran between Stephens and the ball (nothing wrong there) but then slowed down suddenly ,giving Stephens no option but to clatter into him . Its the Burnley way, that we see all over the pitch time and time again. They create "fouls" which on this occasion was seen by both the Ref and VAR . Rodriguez IMO wasnt really looking for the ball, but to create a situation where the ref would give the Penalty. Cheating thugs.

What this - and indeed most of the season - proves is that VAR hasn't made the game fairer or stopped any arguments. It's just made it slower and much less fun.

It summed up why I think the VAR process fails.
He clearly took it as a slight against his ability to do his job.

Many colleagues will prefer to back each other's decisions rather than call them out for making a mistake.
Referees are not immune to this, as is proved time and again by the reviewing of red card decisions.

Would be amazed if increased use of pitch side monitors is not recommended for next season.
It's much easier for them to own up to something they didn't see, than to ask a colleague to judge their performance.

The worst one I have seen was when Bruno Fernandes jumped into the penalty box, turning 180 in the process, he stamps hard on Kosra’s leg and falls to the floor, penalty to United. It was 100% a foul on the defender and probably should have been a card for Fernandes.

I think it's the people looking at the decisions that need replacing, not VAR. We have known for a long time the refs in this league are not good enough. Have specially trained VAR officials, doing VAR full time, which would speed up decisions such as offside and such. Have the ref look at the screens for the likes of penalties, where opinion comes into it, but have specialised people looking at factual things such as offside to speed the process up.

Good summary. I’m surprised so many on here think that was a penalty. I suppose it is a sign of the times that people accept modern techniques for generating a penalty decision.

Stephens - If it had been given it wouldn't have turned over. Personally I think it's a soft one, there was more in the Connolly one v Everton which was eventually given.

Connolly goal - Looked like it was fine, even on the main angle. There isn't a camera that would pick that up on a standard Premier League match camera coverage - and I'm not even sure the bigger games where there are more cameras would have picked it up either.

Burnley disallowed goal - Harsh, but correct. I don't think Ryan would have got to the ball, but ultimately the player is interfering with play.
