If we were in the top two and going strong you'd have a point but as it is we are one of a number of teams fighting over probably 2 playoff spots, hardly gambling away 10s of millions.

True. But it more or less ends any chance of getting to that place.

What level of ambition is there within the club to sell one of only two fit strikers for a song?

But saying we should just get one - and getting one - are completely different things. I'd love us to be able to borrow a season-changing Jason Roberts kind of player - but they are few and far between. We've seen FAR more duds (from that professional scouting network) than we have successes. And if a player is available for loan in jan - what does that say about his likelihood to affect our season more than Barnes can?

I think we nearly agree on this - but as is the way with NSC, it feels like we're arguing.

Yes, but that's what makes NSC worth visiting

Why did you omit the bit of my post that mentioned a loan striker!? That counters all of your post.

Borrow Zaha and then sign him permanently when we beat QPR in the play-offs, Bobby Zamora permitting. The Ashley Barnes transfer would cover the cost.

Firstly, £750k is not a 'song'. Secondly, it depends what the club does if Barnes leaves. He is an average Championship striker, by which I mean he is a good but not great player, and definitely NOT irreplaceable.

He's very young for the experience and goals he has to his name.

I'll be gutted if he leaves.

So will I, IF we don't replace him with someone better.

Not for the first time, you're missing the point.

For what we need to replace him, £750,000 is a song.

What the club needs to do if Barnes leaves is replace him. Assuming all £750,000 is made available to Oscar, then someone who presumably fits the bill? Someone who is better than what we have. If so, whom? Oh, no - you're washing your hands of suggesting possible solutions ('I don't know - I'm not a scout'...)

It's your opinion that Barnes is an 'average Championship striker'. Brighton, and the team that has hardly left the top two all season evidently disagree. Whose opinion am I most going to lean towards?

Leroy would have worked if played more,Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he score in one of the few appearances he made.,considering that Barnes has only scored 6 goals(2 of which were penalties) doesn't in my mind make him an out and out striker.Barnes is an excellent bits and pieces player and works his socks off for the team. However that's not exactly what the club needs,@£750000+ I think its a great deal for everybody. With the new financial restraints coming in that will come in very handy with the money the Bridders and Buckley accrue.UPA

Barnes is worth more than £750,000 to our team. I think he's worth more to us than he is to any potential buyers. He suits our system and he has been excellent for us. Hope beyond hope we hold onto him

So why didn't we play him more ? Is it because we had yet another blinkered manager who refused to look at the stats your way and somehow decided that Barnes all round game was worth more than a penalty box poacher ?

You lean towards who you like. I have an opinion on a player you disagree with. There are other managers in the Championship NOT interested in Barnes.

What reassures me most about this thread - and comments around the Amex recently - is that now there is a real chance of losing Ashley Barnes, it seems the majority of knockers are now accepting that he is in fact a decent striker and would be a loss. Of course there are better out there - but we're unlikely to secure them given the current financial constraints. He's what we have and he's not half bad. I'm glad that even the knockers - when pressed - are now seeing that this is a valuable member of our squad.

If I were him I'd also be asking "Is it worth staying at the Albion where so many idiots get on my back ?".

Hopefully he just ignores them as a noisy and spiteful minority, whilst acknowledging the appreciation the positive fans have towards his great attitude and contribution since he joined us.

but does he suit our system? he is not a lone striker, not a midfielder, not a winger, not a creator...............more of a defensive and aggressive poacher.

But any less than £1.25m is nonsense....he is a proven championship scorer, and that is worth at least £1m.

And we had a different manager at the time. Do you think that had an influence? Could that affect the way we have/will approach the Barnes negotiations?

Bloom and Barber would have learnt from Poyet's pig headed attitude towards our star striker's modest pay request. Doubt they will let a blunder like Poyet's on that one, ever happen again.

Sorry but I thought the thread was about Barnes as a striker not an all round player. Its strikers we need not all around players.SOMEONE who can put the ball in the back of the net regularly, not occasionally, someone who fills you with confidence, and more than anything excites you as a supporter.

I agree that Barnes is a valuable member of the squad, and is a decent striker.....But does he want to stay ? (even if he says "I love it at Brighton !")
