Did Sammy Lee only see the glint of money or was there more to it after having heard the Premier League Ready spiel and thinking eh ?

I thought he had only agreed in principle, but if he did sign a contract it is quite possible that it included a cooling off period?

Would that not include wages being paid for players signed/contracts extended years ago though? Again I have no idea about the numbers but it does seem that we've struggled to match wages demanded/offered elsewhere (Ward, Grabban), whereas previously this didn't seem to happen.

Edit - point I am getting at is having the highest-paid squad of all time does not equal having the highest active recruitment budget.

We've spoken. But not that often. He is his own man, that's for sure. Certainly didn't listen to my POV on Sami a couple of months back! ;-)

If Tony says that this is our most expensive squad, then I for one trust that it is, which points the finger firmly in Burke's direction for our shambles of a summer of recruitment.

As he hadnt started working for us did the club want the hassle of going for compo, which probably wouldnt have been much.

I'm pretty certain he had signed a contract, and that the club could have started legal action etc, but opted not to as it was only a couple days old. Entirely a guess, but I suspect the club felt they had too many other things to concentrate on at the time (mainly getting together a squad ready)?

EDIT/UPDATE: Yes, here's the quote from Paul Barber at the time: "Having already agreed his contract and terms with us to start work on Monday, we could have insisted on Sammy serving a notice period, but we all feel it would have been counterproductive to do so; and while it's incredibly frustrating for us we wish Sammy well"

I'd be lying if I said I knew exactly what Burke's actual role was, what he did on a day to day basis and what affect that had on the club and the current malaise we seem to be in.
All I do know is that something at the club is not right in terms of set up, and nothing has changed for the better since Poyet's exit made it clear that things were not right. Sami going was the right thing, but that was only really dealing with the shop window so to speak. I'd love to think that Burke going means at long last getting down to the real nitty gritty of where things have really been going wrong all this while. I don't know if this alone will make a positive difference or not or whether more changes will need to be made?, only time will tell I suppose, but it's a start and can surely only be a good thing.

One thing is for sure - with changes being made it gives us as fans a long overdue lift and hope that we can move on to better things.

Brilliant news. Now perhaps a few on here who constantly defended how recruitment can eat some humble pie.

I feel much happier about the clubs future now, well done Bloomy, took your time but you've down what was obvious in the end.

Before you really start gloating, perhaps it would be wise to see what the replacement set up is and what success they have.

I'm not convinced we should have ditched Burke as I'm sure he was operating within the constraints of budgets set by those above him. It's all too convenient for those to brag that that the successful signings were Poyet's and the unsuccessful ones Burkes. Whether we offered Burke more involvement in the academy and less on recruitment he has a wealth of experience in that area which we have now lost.

Also, with the changes in FFP, maybe Bloom has decided he is going to spend a bit more now.

There was a post that said we were paying COG 13K a week which some said was stupid, but then a Charlton fan came on and posted that they offered him slightly less than that figure but he accepted ours. So if all this is true it appears we were really wasting our budget on below par players.

If it was Fataddic Charlton offered £6k he reckoned. There was a good few weeks before we came in.

i think he might well be a loss on the academy front. but on the first team the problem seemed to be a lacking a pipeline of targets and/or ability to approach them, or tie up deals in a timely way. or indeed retain the right players. in the last two transfer windows we just weren't at the races. i wonder if his remit was simply too broad and he couldnt cover it all. his back ground is in scouting, and if he wasnt able to do that he lost sight of the objectives (literally)

Two days later he signed a new deal with Bournemouth.
