20% payrise for the Queen

Terrific news, she has more than earned her keep and we should all be eternally grateful for her services to the country.

Sounds like a dodgy tax avoidance scheme to me

Lovely to see we are paying £36,000,000 to the richest woman in the world, our unelected head of state.

I'm sure it's well deserved.

It's because they've changed the way the money is distributed to her. She now received a percentage or profits from the estate rather than a fixed sum (I believe).

We're not. Read the article.

The Crown Estate pays all of its profit to the Treasury, or finance ministry. Under new laws that come into effect in 2013-14, the monarch's pay is calculated as 15 percent of the estate's profits from two years prior.

The changes were designed to ensure the queen's pay would rise and fall with the health of the British economy, which this year entered its second recession since the start of the global financial crisis.

I'm surprised by this.

I heard Man City were sniffing around her as she only had a year left on her existing deal, and thought she would be on the move but maybe it was just her agent trying to get her this new contract

What a stupid thing to say.

Really? Setting aside the £26.4bn she brings into the UK economy, as published by Brand Finance recently, she is the Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Head of the Church of England, she is the main signatory on many government documents and reports. She represents the nation, and alongside her traditional role of visiting many other countries and being the one continuation through many Prime Ministers, she spends a huge amount of time doing charitable works like visiting hospitals, schools and the like. People think she sits on her pile of cash and does nothing for it, but for an 80 year old, she doesn't sit still.

I can't really think of many negatives.
I can help there:

* They are completely unaccountable, seemingly exempt from half the laws of the country and totally profligate.
* They cost an estimated £200m to run. They are not value for money at all.
* This tourism argument is completely laughable. As if people would stop coming if we didn't have a queen.
* So is the international relations. How many times have Prince Phillip and Prince Charles dropped a bollock on the international scene? LOADS.

I won't argue that she's active for someone her age.

But you suggested that she does more than ANYONE who "moans" about her? That is the logic of a simpleton. And it doesn't make it right for her to be an elected head of state.
