I do not remember any stories even though I lived in Hollingdean in the 70s - up to the age of 9 so probably not aware. Have no recollection of Hertford Road Infants or Middle Schools being affected - sorry.
I do remember the abbatoir though and the bizarre but not too unpleasant smell that emanated from it.

The worst part was the cold & wet, up to your elbows in water that was so cold the ice sometimes had to be broken. Then you reach into this cold tank to grab ahold of the tripe and haul it up onto the cutting table. Sometimes the tripe would break up and plunge back into the vat, showering you with cold and dirty water.
Still, at 50p an hour the wage was quite good. Why, in mid winter I could earn around £2.50 of a Sunday....and still have change from a night out at Sherry's!
