Neil Custis of The Sun, I think he’s a decent football hack, put up a good defence when the shite-stirring Radio5 presenter 30 minutes tried to liken the media’s treatment of Sterling to the Bulgarians tonight. He was adamant that his newspaper’s past criticism of Sterling was not racist, they that had treated other England players with life or football form issues such as Rooney exactly the same.

I do agree with him.

It was an unnecessary and a cheap diversion in the interview, just an hour after the Bulgarians had subjected black England players to disgusting behaviour.

Rooney was quite rightly castigated for screwing around on his missus, and drink driving, Sterling was slaughtered for buying his Mum a house, and travelling on a budget airline, and having a gun tattoo on his leg, among other things. Hardly comparable, are they?

Loads of celebs (and folk like the Dowler’s) get fairly and unfairly picked on by the media. Lampard was crucified for leaving his family for another woman, Faldo for dumping wives. The newspapers love shite, and make up stuff

There’s no evidence that they’re racist against Sterling. He’s just another in a very long line of people castigated by a media campaign.

Sorry but that is not right. He was pursued and castigated for the colour of his skin. If you cannot see that then look at yourself, not Sterling.

Yes probably without the media hype something would have happened. We don't know for sure but the media didn't help.I'm sure not EVERY team that plays against Bulgaria which has black players is subjected to racist abuse so we can't say for sure whether or not the media created this situation.

Well, if they only make racist chants against some, not all, that's OK then?

You are a member of UEFA's anti racist committee and I claim my five pounds..................................

The coverage of Sterling was quite obviously racially motivated albeit probably unconscious.

I'm also hoping that tonight doesn't turn onto an attack on Bulgarians. They are many in London (I know some) and I hate to think they are in fear of an attack because of some Neo Nazis back home.

Remember, we have them protesting outside our parliament too.

Quite clearly Bulgaria have to be banned from national competitions for a year or two and the manager needs to put under pressure to resign.

It's really the only way. If our own idiots behave in the same way, I'd expect the same.

I'd love Dunk to have his England place but Mings has just spoken very very well in his ITV interview. He came across as intelligent, calm and reasoned; totally in control.

He just spoke very, very well on camera about the evening too. Well done, Tyrone.

Yup - Mings has just earned my unending respect.

I don't overly rate him as a player, and I'd have Dunk in ahead of him in a heartbeat (albeit with me trying to put my blue and white striped glasses to one side). But I remember seeing Mings in an interview last year on Football Focus I think, when he was still with the muff, and being very impressed with how he spoke. There's a refreshing directness with him, no tedious cliches, no falling back on the usual tired old soundbites. He is an impressive young man, very much captain material. Tonights interview showed again that this is a switched-on fella. He's one to watch.

not sure about this, the tabloids pick up on any player who does something out of the ordinary, or even trivialities that normal young adults would do.

I think Sterling has provided more than enough evidence to suggest that he is treated differently by the tabloid press than other (white) footballers. Our tabloid press is institutionally racist, that’s a given.

If you can't see at who's door tonight display of racism lies at, I seriously think you have a racist problem yourself.
90% of tonight s bigotry was down to Sofias Hitler youth, and 10% down to the football's federations wilfully ignoring the problem, or punishing it with derisory sanctions. It has encouraged the far right into believing it's acceptable.

And if Herr Hitler would have had his way those idiots doing Nazi salutes parents would have been on one way trips to Auschwitz.
Which shows how brain dead they are, people like that can’t be educated

Yup, Phil Foden buys a house for his mum = good lad.

Raheem also buys a house for his mum = vilification

I don’t think Mings deserves to be anywhere near the England team from a football point of view, but have massive respect for him for the mature, and dignified way he dealt with that total bullshit last night on his International debut.

And again, I don’t think he has the ability to be England manager, but we probably couldn’t have a better person in charge of the team to deal with a situation like that than Southgate. Also mature, dignified and intelligent.

Don’t worry. Racist thugs here, won’t be upset by the actions of their like minded Bulgarian mates.

Oh come on. Seriously??????

How on earth can you blame the British media for a bunch of racists pricks on the other side of Europe?

They are the ones who are doing the chanting, making the noises, displaying the hatred.

Jeez. Some people on here.....

It's a feature in every country in the world,.. EVERY country,... our little nation isn't immune from criticism, but we are small fry in the racist order of merit, very small fry... our systems are setup at all levels to tackle and punish it, unlike in many places in the world.

You really are a no nothing borderline racist apologist aren’t you?

Part of the ground was already closed last night after similar racist incidents against Kosovo and the Czech Republic - or did the press stir up those incidents too?

The publicity about expected racist chanting made it more likely to happen, in my opinion. The fault is squarely on thiose who did it but perhaps they saw it as a challenge. ..... and maybe, if they cared about the football, a way to get the game abandoned because they were losing?

I am glad our team carried on and played through it. From a football perspective I don't think we could learn much against poor opposition, although it is good that they found their scoring boots.

Unlike almost everywhere in the world.

It annoys me when people claim the UK is a racist country. Sure, we have our issues, but we are ahead of virtually every other country in the world on that front. One Chelsea fan shouts something racist at Sterling and it's front page news in every paper here. Whole blocks of supporters abuse a black player every time he gets the ball in other countries, and it's barely mentioned anywhere. I just don't think the rest of the world (or large parts of it at least) are that fussed about it, they just don't think like we do. In fact, they probably can't see why we get so uptight about it.

Someone obviously gave the Bulgarian racists the same challenge against Kosovo and the Czech Republic...
