I ended up googling it - you'll never gues what came up, (the only thing that came up)?

Are you sure it wasn't a wind up?

No wasn’t a wind up, people who weren’t builders were buying hard hats to put on the parcel shelf as a code of some sort.

I used to leave an unravelled condom hanging out my back pocket. I was never successful in my sexual pursuit but it did come in handy a couple of times when it was raining.

Slightly off topic but in the 70s I was in the RAF stationed in Norfolk and drove a white Austin 1100. On a friday night I use to drive to Brighton still in uniform (including light blue shirt) and threw my peaked hat on the parcel shelf.

Cars in front would always go bloody slow and cars behind wouldn't overtake. Made the 4 hour journey even longer.

After a while I realised that they thought I was Police. Thick yokels.
