Brown does half a job what a suprise!!

Gas guzzlers pay just a few quid a year more should have doubled it .

Doesn't this only apply to new cars and not ones like mine which are 5 or so years old now?

What annoys me is I am looking into an autogas conversion but because my car is so old ????? I will not get any reduction on congestion charge, road tax etc.

In the grand scheme of things it's a pittance in difference in the cost of owning and running a car, so I can't see it making any difference whatsoever to people's car choices.

The full cost of my road fund licence for a year is less than I spend on petrol each and every week, so it's not something I worry about.

I don't drive a gas-guzzler BTW.

What a missed chance.

Why didn't he abolish road tax and instead put it in on to the tax on fuel.

So we'd pay for our road tax according to how much we drive/pollute, and immediately eliminate the problem of untaxed cars.

Job done.

Because that's far too sensible for any politician of any party to think of. Don't forget most of them are out of touch, power hungary, moronic idiots without two brain cells to rub together ........... between them !

I'd favour the abolition of road tax but there needs to be some form of compulsory registration of vehicles - which is kind of what road tax is for now...

I suspect that the government's thinking is that they WILL abolish road tax at some point in the future when all vehicles meet toughened environmental standards.

For now though, best not to piss off the voters with a further increase in petrol tax...

... but it would be offset by a reduction (to zero) on the road tax.

Abolishing road tax altogether would mean no visible evidence that a car was on the road illegally, as you need to produce MOT and insurance to get one.

It would have to be replaced with something, surely?

And what makes you think that people that don't bother to get road tax actually care enough to get their car MOTed and insured ? The law abiding drivers have all three and those who break the law don't bother with any of them. I don't see them thinking - "Well I get a large fine for not having an MOT so I'll get that but won't bother about road tax as I don't have enough money."

This makes more environmental sense than our system - engine size. I have a 1.3 turbodiesel. emissions are tiny compared to a 1.3 petrol of any description, yet I pay the same.

Oh, and over here you have to display your insurace and NCT (MOT) cert on the windscreen too...

That won't work over here, they've just increased the size of the MOT certificate to A4. Stick that on the windscreen and you wouldn't be able to see out of it!!

NCT and Insurance certs come with a tear-off panel about 2x1.5 inches, and the "tax disc holder" is 3 segments in size here.
