Really? That's great. I first hatched this plan in 1979 then came along the Iranian revolution. I was under the Impression Iran has stopped issuing tourist visas for UK citizens. If that is not the case I would still love to do it.

I find this really interesting. I hope you don't mind me commenting that it seems a fairly common male 'thing'. I know so many blokes who have been, or still are driven in life by a belief they won't outlive their father. My own father lived to a reasonable age but that's never seemed like a benchmark for me. His father died in Brighton General after his ship was torpedoed in WW2 and then it's all a bit murky so maybe not having a wider sample on the paternal side precludes me from feeling that way? On the maternal side the sample of male lifespans I know of is disrupted by the skewing effects of wartime gas and the coal dust from mining so other than the women tending to outlive the men by some distance I've got no real sense of the longevity. It never ceases to fascinate me the things that influence and drive how we see the world and respond to it. Thank you for sharing.

No worries. My perspective is probably influence by being 'on the spectrum' so I can find a range of issues stressful. Empathy is not something I do instinctively so a lot of my attitudes and 'presentation' are learned. Meantime, when events arise that are not part of my direct experience I am likely to find them baffling, unfathomable, alient, threatening, certainly a challenge . . . . mortality, resonating with my age, and the age my dad died, were bound to 'set me off'

Getting to Iran is the easy bit. The challenge may be the Iran-Pakistan border. There's a freight train these days but I'm not sure if there's a passenger service

I took a heap of wickets in my formative years for my team. But none for 19 years having barely walked on a pitch let alone bowled.

I was asked to play in a 20 over match and agreed as long as I didn't have to do anything too taxing.

I didn't want to attempt bowl as I struggle these days but I had a go.

Up I dollied the ball, down it came. The batsman got in a tangle and 19 years later I had my wicket. It must be some sort of record for the same team. All that time between wickets.

The best was yet to come. I joined a tour in Spain to score for the team and drink lots of wine. Often both together. On the last day I was asked onto the pitch as we were one short and about to lose. The team begged me to have a little bowl so I would have done something on the pitch. I reluctantly agreed. Coming on to bowl against an arrogant and talented batsman, I had nothing to lose. Up the ball dollied and he was selecting which town to hit it into. But he dithered too long. Down it came, past a late and hurried bat, and gently strolled towards the stumps in slow motion. The team erupted as if we had won the match. My favourite and most terrible wicket.

So do it, and folk will be grateful just to see you do it again.

Played last night for the first time in 7/8 years. Pulled Hamstring and boots gave up leaving just 3 spikes on left foot. Loved it.

I noticed that, add it to other things he has come out with, I was tempted to comment.
However I have clashed with the OP on many occasions and resisted the urge to bite as he does say "Killing a person. Would be very interesting obviously but I've grown milder with age and would struggle to do it no matter the situation"

which kind of let's him off the hook slightly, but I still find this worrying
