[Food] Brussels Dining Suggestions Please

My wife and I happen to be in Brussels later this week on the day of our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Any suggestions for a good but unstuffy restaurant to celebrate. Near the Grand Place would be handy as we are staying nearby.

Also, suggestions for a Brussels bar or restaurant where we can watch the Newcastle game on Saturday.

Not too sure on a restaurant but I have used The Big Game Sports Bar to watch matches whilst being over there. It's not too far from the Grand Place. It does get busy though.

Not sure quite how unstuffy you want but best thing I ate during my recent jaunt to Brussels was a chicken souvlaki at Leonidas. near Grand Place.

I will admit, that I'd been attacking the Kwak just prior, but I remember it as being utterly delicious.

Gently boil, don't overcook. Good with most roasts and any extras can be recooked in a bubble and squeak

I usually avoid the restaurants in the streets around the Grand Place as many are tourist traps and the staff can be a bit pushy when trying to lure you in. I have found the restaurants around the nearby Place St Catherine better.

Yes, Place St Catherine, particularly along the Quai aux Briques.
This area is dominated by some really nice fish & seafood restaurants, some with tables over the little stretch of water.

If you're only in Brussels for a short time and it's your anniversary forget the football and head to this lovely old cafe / bar for drinks - it's called Le Cirio and is towards the Grand Place along the Rue de la Bourse and home to 'Chocolat', the bar's resident furry black cat.

I worked irregularly in Brussels a bit a few years back and never found anywhere to really recommend for food. To be honest, I'd recommend Bruges as I can't stand the place.

That said, it won't show the football but with a choice of over 2000 beers it is worth stopping by the Delirium Cafe for one.

Delirium claims 2,000 beers, but they don't have anything like that amount. Ask for anything remotely unusual and the chances are it will be "out of stock."

To be fair the food in the Cirio is not bad either.

I haven't eaten in all the places along Quai Aux Briques (largely because they aren't cheap), but of those I have frequented I'd suggest the oddly monikered 'Rugbyman No.Two' (http://rugbymantwo.com) is the best option.

But the place I would recommend most is a little more of a trek to get to from the centre. I'd say get the bus out to Ixelles and go to the Ultime Atome (https://ultimeatome.be/en) - probably where I've eaten most often in the past 20 years as it strikes the right balance of decent price, good food and laid-back atmosphere.

That is true but it can be a choice between that or a watered down Stella served by an over friendly Russian in a hotel bar because of the huge amounts of diplomatic activitity in the area. In those instances, I will take the 'out of stock monsieur' any day of the week.

Rugbyman No Two is the 2nd restaurant link I put up.
Agree it is indeed a strange moniker, but what is even weirder still is their almost defiant claim that their restaurant has "absolutely no connection with Rugbyman No 1".
What is going on here with these Belgians ??
Much like their national football team these days, was very impressed with Belgium.
The history, the culture, the architecture, the cafes & bars, the cost & ease of getting around.
Over 4 days we visited Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent & Bruges and never had a train journey longer than 40 mins and all for between €6 & €9.
All this and only 2 hours from St Pancras.- bloody loved Belgium, especially Ghent.

La Villette in Place de St Catherine has always been decent. Nona very good too.
