The good thing about stats is that if you like someone, you can select the ones showing them in a better light...

Why just choose stats over two full seasons rather than their respective whole tenures (premier league games only)?

Because the full picture* tells a different story:

Bruce: 84 games, 23 wins, 23 draws, 38 losses. Scored: 94, conceded 139 (-46GD), 92 points, 1.1 points per game
Benitez: 86 games, 27 wins, 21 draws, 38 losses. Scored: 97, conceded 107 (-10GD), 102 points, 1.19 points per game

OK, so it's 'only' 10 points more, with the benefit of 2 extra games, but it still paints a different picture to the carefully selected stats showing the same points return. The GD also shows that under Rafa they were at least in the game more often than under Bruce

Having managed Sunderland previously, he was already an outsider.

To be fair, he could have stayed where he was wanted at Sheffield Wednesday. When he was first linked to the Newcastle job, it was quite clear that most Geordies didn't want him to come and most Massive fans didn't want him to go. He went for the money, if he was a die hard Newcastle United fan, he never would have managed Sunderland. He gave shit excuses for the poor performances, but he just wasn't up to the job and he almost certainly knew it before he took it, but it came with a nice salary and a good pay off if he was sacked, he could have walked earlier, but he hung out for the pay off, so not much sympathy from me for suffering from some unpleasant comments, to secure the multi million pound pay off.

Based on Potters last two seasons and Hughtons last two seasons with us, which one do you think Brighton fans would be happier about us having this season?
We of all clubs should be able to recognise that results and performances are two separate issues, and that performances under Potter make us believe we are a good striker signing away from being a handful for anyone, whereas performances under Hughton made us believe that we were years away from being competetive. Truthfully the squad is better now than then, but Potters style must give the board confidence to invest in a player, whereas under Hughton they would wonder if the new player would ever get on the pitch, and if he did, if he would ever see the ball.

And it is not as if it was the style of play. Benitez is a dull, defensive manager. He is revered by the Geordies entirely it seems because he was famous. It made them feel important in much the same way the Saudi takeover is now doing.

That's so sad. Personally speaking l would have much more time for a journeyman manager like Steve Bruce, (a self confessed Toon addict), than Rafa who is only in it it would seem for the money and the glory.

As opposed to Bruce who hung around stinking the place out until he got his £7M pay off? I have more respect for Hyypia who walked when he realised he was the wrong man for the job.
Not sure which Managers are not in it for money, but clearly Bruce wasn't in it for the glory.

Bruce's style, and that of his predecessor were very similar, as were the results, that was my point.

Potter and Hughton, style wise at least are lightyears apart.

If you get a club promoted you are almost always going to be revered regardless of what you did otherwise, which makes a lot of sense but is not always justified. With the squad Newcastle had in the Championship they would have had a decent chance of going up with Bruce as manager. Similar to Wolves a few years ago or Manchester City back in 01/02.

Nothing wrong with Benitez obviously - has some great achievements in the past - but he is/was a bit overhyped when it comes to what he did in Newcastle.

I think Newcastle would have had a good chance of going up if Donald Duck was manager back in 2016/17. They should have walked the division, their squad was head and shoulders better than any other that season.
