It's more complex than that.

At some point in the past the teams in Division One decided to break away. Sky got involved and the availability of lots of live games (something in the the UK we were deprived of) pumped millions into the game.

Something clicked between the gung ho nature of British Football with TV. It may not be the best in the world, but it's simply the best for television.

The games get sold abroad etc...

You end up with a league that technically isn't the the best in the world, but the one that most viewers want to match and pays the biggest wages across all the teams.

That opens up the market for the best players across the world to want to play here.

English players are squeezed out in the same way that Italian and French players are "squeezed out" from the Premier League also.

The difference being of course that English players would rather play in their home country and not move abroad. Why would they ? The league they want to play in is home.

First Class Premier League = Second Rate National Team.

That's the reality I'm afraid. It would appear you can't have both.

Boxing Day '99 when Vialli fielded the first ever starting XI with no British players. Not far from 20 years ago now.

'times have changed' is no longer appropriate when this has been common place for literally decades!

Since 1999 is only one full decade. Not 'decades' yet.

why are our academies not producing more English players for the higher level.
We do need to build a strong base for our pyramid system so more money is needed to go into grassroots levels .
Better playing surfaces for youngsters etc. Would be a start.
This is only my view for all sportsmen/women in uk. I am also surprised how well we do with lack of facilities on the world stage.
More use of school facilities would be start.
More all-weather facilities and making sure all children and Adults have the opportunity to play sport.

Our academies are producing PLENTY of players; just last year England won the U-17 World Cup and were runners-up in the UEFA U-17 Euros; the U-19s won the UEFA Euros; the U-20s won the World Cup and a squad won the Toulon Tournament and at U-21 level they were semi-finalists in the UEFA Euros.

The problem isn't producing the players; it is giving the youngsters a chance to play in the first team at club level to gain the necessary experience required to continue their development.

Obviously need a few to break into league teams.

They will never develop if you don't play them seems to me there is a reluctance to play young players at most clubs .

Has our league been full of foreign players since 1966 then? We didn't even qualify for the World cup in 74 or 78 or the Euros in 72, 76 and 84.

Would much rather our English players earn the right to play with some of the best players in the world, than watch an England team with the likes of Carlton Palmer, Joey Barton, Michael Ricketts and Gavin McCann.
