If I remember rightly it was pre-empted by a gang of kids walking around the playground chanting 'Who wants to play, British Bulldog'.

Could possibly be an early 60's forerunner which evolved into British Bulldog 123 though.

That reminds me of the chant "all in for football, no girls playing," which would be recited as the boys marched around the playground, arms around each others shoulders, until we had a sufficient number for a match.

I remember the swimming pool version being far too drowny for most participants.

hmmm
thought we played that it started with one bulldog then everyone getting to the other side, unless caught, in which case they became a bulldog too.
last man standing won.
everyone else gets a kicking at some point, the severity dependant if you get caught early on or near the end.

That,s the version i recall and the Tennis ball game was Stinger but below the knee.

This. Well at Stanmer SS it was. Great fun until caught then you had to count your bruises.

I have no recollection of team selection for BB. In the many games I played, the game started with only one person trying to stop everyone from getting to one side of the playground the other, and each person he caught would then join him. The winner was obviously the last person to make it across. Rules on who became the initial bulldog in the subsequent game varied from winner of previous game to the person caught first in the previous game, the latter of which was more common in my school as we were cruel ********.

Our was started by a couple of kids who would put their arms rounds each others shoulders. Start walking round the playground chanting "all join on, to havd a game of bulldog", or a different game. Then if you wanted to play you would join on the till practically the whole playground were in a big sideways line arms round shoulders walking round all singing "all join on.."

That bit was fun too

Blimey that's taken me back. Isn't the brain an odd thing - that memory has not surfaced for 50 years until you mentioned that. I can remember it as clear as day now, but as for what I had for breakfast this morning - no idea.

Wasn't Red Rover the one with two teams/lines? While British bulldog started with just one person trying to catch others as they ran from one side to the other.
