See the story below. Are we having a similar visit ?

Bristol World Cup bid is assessed

Councillor Simon Cook on Bristol's World Cup bid

A delegation from the Football Association is visiting Bristol later to assess its suitability as a possible host city for the 2018 World Cup.
The West Country city is one of 15 across England hoping to be selected.
Bristol City FC's plan to build a new 42,000 seat stadium at Ashton Vale is key to a successful bid.
The FA team is expected to review the city's green spaces, including The Downs and Ashton Court, as possible areas for fans' villages.
In December the city will find out if it is a candidate city and in December 2010, will discover if England will be hosting the 2018 event.

Bristol is MILES bigger than Brighton and in terms of population, really ought to be part of the bid.

I won't hold my breath though - they have two shithouse soccerball outfits and a couple of crumbling stadia and the two clubs can't seem to get their acts together over getting one proper stadium built.

Only really announced yesterday, but been in the pipeline for a while.

I was going to post about it yesterday but forgot.

All cities have the chance to apply, and to think that the World Cup is only going to go to the big established stadia is a little short sighted.

What Bristol are actually proposing is to build a new 30,000 stadium for Bristol City which will will be temporarily extended by 12,000 for the World Cup.

Personally I think it's a great idea. You some sort of legacy from the bid and I'd rather see something like this rather than simply rolling it out to the Premiership grounds.

Would love to see some games in Bristol. I'm with clapham gull, there should be some legacy from the WC; I would much prefer to see games held in the largest population centres than in the places with the largest grounds (where they aren't one and the same).

i think we should apply ;)

So do I.

Just need to fill in the corners of the new ground, bring across the Withdean South Stand and whack it on the new stadium roof and away we go.

Living down here as I do i would bloody love it. However City have to get planning permission first and unfortunately they've thrown their lot in with Tesco.
The new stadium seems to hinge not only on getting permission to build but also permission for the current Ashton Gate site to be turned into a Tesco Hypermarket.
Down here there's a lot of opposition to that which may mean the whole scheme fails.

I've read that grounds need to be over 40k for games, but can be smaller if they are only training camp bases for teams - i.e Brazil at Olympic stadium i think

How come they abandoned the plans to re-develop Ashton Gate in favour of a move down the road? Are they Pompey in disguise?

:lolol:

i think this is pie in the sky, they have to try but who's really going to sign off on one of the Bristol stadiums over established larger grounds? have they got permission for the new ground yet? or will they be faced with years of cackbadgers like we were?

and we dont have a hope so close to London.

They're not - they are going to build a new one if they get permission - with a temporary extension to 42,000, reducing to 30,000 after the competition.

Other countries build stadiums when they hold the world cup, no reason why it shouldn't happen here.

A spanking new stadium in Bristol will get the vote over Anfield and Villa Park.

I think it's a great idea.

Which one should go though? Anfield - rich in tradition and probably a stadium that so many out of towners might feel obliged to visit? Or Villa Park - not quite the same storied venue, but a much better location and the biggest stadium in the midlands and our second city?

It's interesting - the new White Hart Lane and the Emirates would both qualify, but be very near to each other.

It will get political, and I presume the Government will put pressure on the FA to have the event spread out around the country.

it's also a shame that the Eastlands - a beautiful, 45,000 seater modern stadium that is UEFA Grade A or whatever - will be overlooked for that scruffy old bomb site in Salford.

i think the emirates will get the nod though.

are hillsborough and elland road dead certs? i presume they would be on the promise of mega regeneration.
