The amount of beard wearers in there? The fact that if they don't like the look of you (ie you're under 40) you won't get served if you've had a few? The fact you can't move without getting a faceful of sweaty armpit?

All good points but the beer is bloody excellant. Such is its reputation amongst CAMRA types now that it really needs to be a lot bigger.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's a decent boozer. Just too small and they do tend to look at you funny if you're are under 40, or so I've found.

I used to be the stocktaker for the company that owned The Quadrant in the late 70s company called Lion Taverns, which was owned by Maxwell Josephs ex wife. They also had The Alhambra Bar on Brighton seafront, The Rockingham in Silverwood St (?) and The Walmer Castle, now called The Walmer.

At the time the Quadrant was the only pub in Brighton that didn't have a mens toilet as the law didn't require one as there was a public convenience in the middle of the road, by the Clock Tower, that was open during the hours that the pub was open.
i think you will find you are wrong there
there was a pub on the seafront with no loos
it used to have to close when the public ones did

I haven't really experienced the under 40 thing even though I am (by a long way) but thats probably because I only ever use it when I'm drinking pre-game. Then its just mobbed with Brighton fans so its hard for them to pick on individuals to sneer at.

Some real ale pubs do tend to have a probelm with younger drinkers and assuming we are all hooligans. It's one of the reasons I like the Stanley - a beautiful pint and a relaxed atmosphere.

I could well be wrong as I am saying what I was told by the manager so perhaps he had it wrong about the toilets also. Sorry.

Kings head only went in there the ionce although when i was at NTL used to go in teh Albion a lot and that was a right old sh1t hole.
The Albion is still a shit-hole. Full of single mum chavs subjecting their pitiful offspring to afternoons of smoke and boredom whilst strapped in their buggies. Its a grim, grim place.

Kings Head is LOVELY though.

My faves, in no particular order (except the top one):

Kings Head, Fishersgate
Red Lion, Shoreham
Cricketers, Southwick
Romans, Southwick
La Cala, Southwick (perfect in the summer)
The Sussex, Brighton
Market Inn, Brighton
The Crab Inn, Shanklin
The Caxton, Brighton
Swiss Cottage, Shoreham

Have to agree with some of that Easy, but where is La Cala?
Is that the one by the Harbour?

Middle of Bedford Place - turn towards the seafront from Western Rd at the corner one away to the Hove side of Waitrose - always known it as the Lion and Lobster tho.
