This is the bit I don't understand - how did a dispute initiated on the spurious basis of challenging a management desire to try to restructure the workload to enable a more equitable distribution of work become a dispute about pay resulting in a massive pay rise for a group of miserable, uncaring workers who clearly don't give a toss about the public they provide a service to???

One could be forgiven for thinking that may have been the driving issue all along, but only the cynical would believe that...

Unfortunately the Greens in Brighton Council are either inflexible Green fundamentalists ...

think you have to be a fundementalist to get anywhere within a movement, to become part of its political elite. its not enough to simply want to be green, show some concern for the environment and do a bit better. single issue party sees everything through the lens of their issue, and too much wishful thinking to not realise other similar grades will be having union meetings this evening.

Caroline Lucas is a great MP and has done loads for local residents that has nothing whatsoever to do with Green politics - including a very close friend of mine going through the loss of their son.

But when you get to council level I'm sure you're right, whether it's the cycle path nazis, the Momentum lot on Labour or Timothy and his wagyu beef eating, cyclist beating, union jack waistcoat wearing ways.

The further down you go, the madder they are.

It is interesting, and probably needs to be taken onto it's own thread, although I suspect the B word will mean it ending up in the pit.

My initial thought is that what we in the UK are facing, is a high wage, low skill re-alignment as this is where the shortage is in the UK. I wonder how palatable the associated increase in the cost of living will be to a British Electorate, Government and Government backers. Because, despite what is said elsewhere (I think we both know where ), this is the simple fact of the manner.

Personally, I have no issue with that, but as you pointed out, it is seen as a fairly socialist approach to a national economy and a million miles from where the UK Government and Major Political parties have been throughout my lifetime. It doesn't surprise me if a socialist government like Sweden are going this way as it is a conundrum, and one we are now hurtling towards at the speed of light and still accelerating

I can't see it happening here though. I couldn't imagine Johnson as one of the greatest socialist Prime Ministers in British history, but there again, I couldn't imagine Johnson being capable of sitting the right way on a toilet seat without help, and yet there are significant numbers of people who think he should be running the country.

Oops, I mentioned him, didn't I :lolol:

Final question before you raid your wine cellar.

Do you think we’ll fully rejoin the EU at some stage in the not too distant future?

My pro EU 16 year old daughter asked me, I said it’s complicated because would they have us back? They endured decades of UK moaning about stuff, long before Farage became a force.

I've just been watching the report on South Today.

The pay deal will mean the bin lorry drivers will get an extra 6k, meaning that they will be on 30k, while other roles will get between 1k and 3k extra a year.

You can make your own minds up whether this indicates further industrial action in years to come.

Yes, that's what I saw this lunchtime, so it is a rise of over 20%.

As for future action - of course they will. It's a no-brainer.

So an unqualified bin driver who just sits in his cab is now on £30k per annum and that hard working qualified Nurse just finishing a tiring shift is on how much?????
Binmen AND Mark Turner, hold your heads in shame.

I'd expect my Bin Lorry driver to at least have a licence that allowed him to drive it. Which probably makes him qualified, no?

I also expect him/her/other to take their sandwiches to work in a brief case now

Ok so he can sit on his arse and drive a big lorry but it is hardly taxing mentally. I would still rather the Nurses got £30k a year instead of them.

I have seen 30K per annum and a 6K pay rise for drivers quoted numerous times now.

So for a second time, can anybody give a sauce for these figures please ?

Thank You

Too late :drink:

No. I don't think we will as too many people will lose face. In order to address the multiple issues coming at us we will take a piecemeal approach to reversing decisions (see the numbers of visas that will be granted over the next few months leaving us as the only European nationals without freedom of movement ). Further down the line, we will have some sort of hot-botch of adapting EU regulations to allow us to trade effectively, leaving us somewhere in the middle, with no influence, none of the benefits but a lot of the controls.

The EU would have us back, if the financials were right for them, same as always but we won't entertain it

They are now dramatically and undeniably overpaid.

Congratulations to them - they've made the City disgusting in order to do it and highlighted how incompetent, unprofessional and amateurish our Council is. Let's hope this gets remembered the next time there are local elections, more than 42.7% (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Brighton_and_Hove_City_Council_election) show up to vote.

The people who make hundreds of millions a year and put their money in the Cayman Islands instead of paying taxes that could fund these increases and more are overpaid.

30k per annum and a 6k pay rise?

I heard they were on 24k, meaning a 6k pay rise is a........drum roll.........25% increase. Yes, 25%.

Due reward for holding the city to ransom, and leaving it in a disgusting mess. Thoroughly deserved.

I have seen lots of people on this thread quoting those figures that they have heard, but can't find out where they have come from. I've simply asked for a source for these figures and each time I have asked, nobody can provide one. Do you have a source for these figures ?

Thanks

Post #345 quotes a South Today report from yesterday - which may well still be available on catch-up

Yes, I heard it on South Today. The reporter was Piers Hopkirk, and he was stood outside Hove Town Hall. That's good enough for me.

Nurses should also make more money but I guess if they go on a strike people would sit here and moan about the unions being greedy, all while the billionaires keep ruining your (and mine to as this is the case everywhere) country.
