Yes, we use Two Together for aways. Could have been that rather than the strip as was definitely an away day when they wouldn't go through the barrier.

I assume its the fact that the ticket says you have to travel with others but the automatic barrier can't tell if you are so won't let you through, even though the human at the gate doesnt give a toss about the ticket. Most annoying one was a couple of years ago at London Bridge, where there was no humans around the barriers and we ended up having to walk miles via another line entrance to get to the correct line.

Last time I was on a train in Germany, the guy with the ticket inspector was carrying a machine gun. That was effective!
