As others have asked, can you clarify who or what is Gun Wharf? Most people (myself included) have never heard of it prior to this thread. Is it something only people who drive know about (my best guess)?
Gun Wharf is basically the re-development of Portsmouth Harbour, done around the Spinnaker Tower and the Millennium Walk (a seafront and dockside footpath). The shopping centre is only part of it. Definitely not car-only, Portsmouth Harbour railway station is smack bang in the middle (Gun Wharf to the right, Historical Dockyard to the left).

Couldn't believe it the first time I went there when I remember what it used to be like.

I work in the dockyard and gunwharf is a nice place to go for a spot of lunch. Lots of restaurants/cafes/bars and nice atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, i love Brighton but gunwharf is not that bad. I was based there before it was redeveloped so i know what an improvement it is.

I went to Gunwharf last year with the missus and its not too bad. It was on a wet and windy weekend so that was a bit of a shame but on a sunny weekend it is a nice place to spend a few days. Plenty to do and see with the shops and the harbour

Well chaps, the Stat's are back from GWQ, and what a thoroughly pleasant time we had.
I know you Brightonians don't want to hear it, but today couldn't have been easier.

Off the train and HMS Warrior is right there in front of us.
Drinks looking out across the harbour.
With kids up the tower, (Wifey off round the shops)
Lunch again overlooking the harbour.
Round a few more shops, then home.

Highlight was putting a message in the time capsule bottle, under the heading, things you're looking forward to:-

6 points from you next season, SEAGULLS.

Certainly beat trekking up and down Queens Road.

Trekking? Really?

Anyone with any sense walks through North Laine anyway.
I may well have overstated my point.
Hey never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Glad you had a good family day out - we certainly did last Autumn, not ever having been there before, and not really being sure what to expect.

I think one of Brighton's biggest threats, as highlighted on this thread, is the complacency of some of those who champion it as a destination for shopping / drinking / eating / just a family day out or whatever. Fact is, arriving in Brighton, having not been there for a couple of years, I was immediately struck by the litter, the congestion and the general sense that lots of things needed lots of private and public money invested in them. The pissed up tramps sprawling on the grass by the Pavillion didn't add much to the day, plus everywhere we tried to eat was staffed by bored looking eastern Europeans who spent most of the time texting on their phones and looked really pissed off if we wanted anything. Like a menu.

I've always loved Brighton, but Jesus it needs some money spent on it, and some coordinated thinking about how to finally harness one of its biggest assets - the seafront - and not cut it off from the rest of the town with a 4 lane road jammed with traffic.

Good call! Also needs some thinking about how better to link the Marina to the town. It's too far out. A cute lil' extension to the Volks Railway would be a start, or some wizzy transport link/tram that gets out there in about two minutes flat. And the road traffic can f*** right off to somewhere - anywhere! - else.
