Does anyone live or has lived at the Marina? I know it gets a lot of stick and has not been the success it had planned to be but always strikes me as having some nice quiet flats and everything on your doorstep.

Friend of mine has just purchased there and got me thinking, any honest advice would be welcome :)

I lived there for a couple of years back in 2002-03 and really loved it. It was surprisingly quiet & I was at the Asda end of the flats. Short walk to the city. That was before all the shops were put there so I imagine living there now would be much better.

Cheers Stumpy, that is what my friend says that the flats are actually very quiet and peaceful. I like the idea of opening the balcony on a warm day too :)

I've always thought it would be a nice place to live... views, boats, restaurants... great in summer, and a tad cheaper than the city centre too.

But I've long fancied the Art Deco splendour of Marine Gate. Large rooms, huge windows, 24/7 concierge, stylish, Noel Cowardesque Thirties ambience... Anyone
lived there?

Those buildings look a bit run down now though. Big windows single glazed must be a bit nippy too on a windy day.

The posh bit
I lived there for a bit. Loved it. It was quiet and flats quite nice. It was a bit like being on holiday every day if that makes sense as the ambiance was good.
Note I say WAS as I think it is a bit pikey now.

I quite like the marina, even though it looks ugly as all hell on the outside, its nicer on the inside (minus everything before the pubs as you come in)

"f*** me! Not the Marina" (to the tune of Don't Cry For Me Argentina sung by unofficial Brighton mayor Terry Garoghan)

I could have bought a small yellow house down there for £29500 in 1991. But I didn't.

When they were built in 79/80 they were supposed to have a lifespan of 25 years.

Some of the boats for sale at the marina look to be tremendous value, well compared to the cost of a flat in brighton anyways. You seem to get a lot of boat for your money. Does anybody know if you're actually allowed to live on them all year round? Anybody actually tried it?

I imagine the mooring fees would make rates on houses look like petty cash, you'd be better off on a converted MTB in Shoreham :lolol:

Is these weird old barge things stranded on the mud by the footbridge? Bet they're damn freezing to live in. And they look like they'd sink if they ever came into contact with water

Agreed. A gal at work lives on an ex MOD boat in Shoreham and saves a fortune, although her and her boyfriend aren't supposed to be on it all the year round.

Houseboats are brilliant ... until you start to imagine that they are seaworthy. Some friends of mine lived in one at Shoreham a few years back. After a year of what they believed was worthwhile carpentry, they set off for France, only to be rescued by the RNLI off Rottingdean.
