[Sussex] Brighton Main Line 2 to be built?

Most of the line from Oxted to Uckfield is single track, very high viaduct has speed limit, land from Uckfield to Lewes is privately owned. Not very straightforward. Route from Eridge to T Wells has been built on. Pie in the sky me thinks. Hope so. Uckfield is a nice little town, don't want it completely destroyed.

The proposal creates another route from London to Lewes and Eastbourne. No new line to Brighton. I am well into my 80’s so not in my lifetime methinks. Would have thought that any rail investment would be prioritised for the north not the southeast.

I'm in my 50s and I do not anticipate ever travelling on such a line.

If you look at the TfSE document that this story is based on, it says that reopening a route from Lewes to Uckfield and Tonbridge Wells is an aspiration. This is about as vague and non-committal as you can get.

Oh weell, that's curtains for the Lavendar Line and the Spa Valley Railway then! I'd have thught the obvious route morth of Eridge would be via Oxted (which needs electrificaton anyway), but hey, if they want to go to London via Tonbridge and Orpington, so be it. Good luck with re-opening the Tunbridge Wells West to TW Central single line tunnel to 90 mph trains!

Re-opening the Haywards Heath to Horsted Keynes section, and electrifying onwards to East Grinstead would be feasible. All heritage railway movements stopped for a couple of hours in the morning rush hour and a couple more in the evening, with just northbound fast(ish) electric trains in the morning and osuthbound in the evening - that could work well.
They could turn off the juice in the day time to make it safer for the volunteers and steam trains on the Bluebell.

It never ceases to amaze me where you can't go by train in the SE. When I was in Leeds it felt as if you go anywhere in the UK from there, save the SE. Compare and contrast with Royal Tunbridge Wells - Hastings or London. Amazing.

I’m glad they pointed out from the west, is towards the east.

Put in an east to north spur at Ford then, and route the trains north of Horsham through Leatherhead and Epsom rather than running them across through Crawley to Three Bridges then......
There are options to avoid E. Croydon from that direction.
