Did you also know.............

The stone gate pillars are more properly known as the 'pylons'. They were erected to mark the northern limit of 'Greater Brighton' which was created on 1st April 1928. They were designed by John Denman and have foundation stones laid by the Duke and Duchess of York on 30th May 1928 (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Buried inside are coins, copies of the Brighton & Hove Herald and the Sussex Daily News and also a bound book recording the laying of the foundation stones. The cost was born by a public subscription of £993 and a contribution from Herbert Carden of £2,555. The western pylon bears the message: 'Hail guest, we ask not what thou art. If friend we greet thee hand and heart. If stranger no longer be. If foe our love shall conquer thee.'

It's quite weird to think that years ago, between the two pillars was the entire width of the road in and out of Brighton !

Have to say that every time I've entered Brighton down the M23 route I've found that they look quite tacky!

Personal opinion, of course....

"Tacky"...yes, of course they are...one can only begin to imagine the effortless cool, sophisticated, stylish yet timeless "classy" nature of the elegant city of Reading's equivalent.

Why thank you... not tacky in the slightest obviously.

I imagine that you obviously have statues of Queen Victoria, the UKs side of the Bayeux tapestry, the gardens, the Miawand, the resting place of Kings and Queens of England and what was the largest abbey in the UK prior to its upheaval. Naturally important and historical relics that I expect Brighton therefore has in abundance.

Oh no, you have two pylons that look like they've been erected in around 10 minutes á la some new town like Milton Keynes, and a royal "Pavilion" that looks like a meccano Taj Mahal. And a cremated pier. Just look at the sea, at least you have nice views I suppose.

I remember as a boy travelling down to the Goldstone in the late 70s that there was a tradition amongst Mid-Sussex supporters to cheer as we passed through the pylons in the car. I don,t know why, but it was supposed to be bad luck for the Seagulls if you forgot.

There was a proposal to do this but our ever efficient council have never got round to doing it. I guess the Nimbys would also be upset with yet more concrete inside an area of AONB.

A statue of Queen Victoria?

A Garden?

What WAS the largest Abbey in England?

All in one place?

WOW!

All wrapped up inside a TOWN that makes Milton Keynes look like Florence. Middle England in all it's f***ing averageness. Didcot, Swindon, Reading, Crawley, they're all the same. The same McDonalds English towns that have no life, no identity, nothing.

Dead eyed suburbanites and hooded and capped fuckwits shuffling off to the Multi-plex. Or the shopping centre. Or the Wetherspoons. It's all the same. It's infected pretty much every town and city in this country but it's epicentre is in places like Reading.

I'm afraid you'll have to wait until 800 years til until reaching historical importance. Until then its Southend, Blackpool, etc. Couple of things and not much else.

For someone who is been to Reading, I suggest you go back with your eyes open. There is infinitely more to do than there is in Brighton. Granted, its a s***hole, but at least there's a lot going on. The only thing I want of yours is the Lanes. You can keep the rest of the plastic unhistoric and nondescript nonsense.
