Mate of mine was involved in some of the test evacuations of the pod recently. From what he described I hope it doesn't get stuck........200 people will need to be individually winched down......

Just wondered if there was a public consultation at any point as to whether the people who live in Brighton wanted the tower?

Only ask after the hoops you have to jump through for the council reg building work and extensions to keep everything in keeping with the neighbourhood.

Its got to be the most striking piece of architecture in the country now?

I like it. And it is getting a hell of a lot of media coverage not just in the UK but abroad as well. And it should return a cool million to the tax payer every year. I'm struggling to see any meaningful realistic negative here.

The concept is good and the pod design interesting. For me Brighton is not the location. Stick it in central London, New York, Cape Town, etc and it would work. Brighton just does not have the views to make it successful. Shame really.

Great news how did you work out tax payers will make a million a year from this?

I know. It's an accepted fact that The South Downs National park is a dump.

I have however changed my mind about not going on it. It seems it will be the only place you won't have to actually look at the eyesore.

It fits in with the Brighton seafront to an extent. It may even be described as a boon to the landscape.......of Brighton. Unfortunately you can see it far and wide and from where I live it just looks like a factory chimney adding to an increasingly cluttered skyline.

i wonder whether locals would have objected to the Royal Pavilion when built? today its celebrated as core part of the City's identity.

I said return, and as it's widely reported in the press I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make.

It's just another dick waving architecture project. Yes, yes, it's the tallest slimmest thingamebobby ever built, it is shiny and tall and simply amazing. You know what else is simply amazing? The natural Sussex coast skyline with the Downs sweeping in behind. Without a big, useless pole poking up in the middle of it.

How about that it looks appallingly ugly, like some hideous factory chimney creating a permanent disfigurement to a famous landscape?

It's no worse than some of the other abominations along the seafront. If you're suggesting the Brighton and Hove seafront is a glorious and contiguous parade of Regency architecture then I presume you don't live in, or know the city, very well.

You are quite right. Some of the Brighton seafront is in an appalling state. There really is much better projects the money should have been spent on. A modern sport and fitness complex perhaps? There's a few structures along this stretch of coastline that can be seen for miles. None are particularly attractive. It's not just those in Brighton that have to put up with it.

My point is more about the idea the seafront is a continuous/contiguous parade of Regency architecture. It's not, it's a real mish-mash of styles from pretty much every decade since the Regency period.

Ah, yes, agree with that too.

Is this a genuine question? And mine is a genuine question.

Yep how do we get a million a year return to the tax payers, because I'm guessing you are talking about ticket sales? But this is a private company build backed by council as guarantors. I'm openminded about about profit generated on the locality of the i360 but would be pleasently suprised if this amounts to a million a year pro rata back into our community!
