Any phrase with the word LOCAL in it, you could take the word LOCAL out and replace it with the word SHIT and it'll still be accurate. Local band, local paper, local radio, local telly.

Local Radio as in Fart FM? Well not really that local as I believe a lot of the shows are networked nationwide. I predict that it will be unmitigated shite.

If it were to follow the model of public access TV in the states, with a real free remit to provide all sorts of shows on topics catering for different folks, it could actually be a bit of a hit. I'm thinking Radio Reverb in TV form. Reverb is very amateurish, granted, but there is at least a real eclectic mix of programming and rather than it being something you leave on the background all day, it becomes a vehicle for home grown shows created by local talent that you can listen in to at the times you know a show you like is on, or perhaps catch up online at a later date.

Somebody already mentioned Wayne's World, and I don't think that's something that should be laughed at. The idea of a very low budget show appealing to the yoof, made by a bunch of mates who are in it for fun rather than looking to make money, actually has a lot of potential in Brighton. We're a city BRIMMING with wannabe TV talent, so let's give these people a break on local TV.

The trick will be to make it genuinely engaging, unique and free from the restrictions you'd get on the major networks.

Could be a real breeding ground for talent if they do it right and actually give people a chance. But it really does need to have a genuinely ECLECTIC mix of programming. ITV will try and get an audience hooked for a whole evening by showing talent shows followed by game shows followed by moronic outtake clip shows etc. But I'd far rather our channel mixed up its shows. So what if an hour long programme profiling local bands were followed by a show about gardening? People should hear about something they might be interested in and tune in for that. There's no need to hold an audience for hours and hours on end. We should be providing different things for different people rather than appealing to the lowest common denominator in an effort to attract as large a share of the audience as possible.

BBC Three often crows about how it has been instrumental in giving new talent a chance, resulting in shows they are proud of such as Gavin and Stacey, Little Britain and Him & Her. But in truth, none of these shows have been borne out of writers and actors new to TV. What we need is local programming with no fears. Give people their chance, even if they don't have the experience. It is new ideas which we seem to be short of in this country. So what if we get shows fronted by folk who are petrified in front of camera, or have no charisma. It's a learning curve and I'd sooner we got people learning, than we just had an extended version of Meridian Tonight.

How many budding Alan Partidges do we have, just here on this very board, who are full of TV show concepts? Isn't this exactly the sort of place where we should be allowed to share these ideas with an actual chance of getting them commissioned?

How about this for a show...

Wash You Were Here

Local celebrity Brett Mendoza presents a Brighton & Hove themed travel show with a difference. Instead of reviewing resorts and locations, he reviews bathing facilities at different local hotels. Mendoza has his own specialist rating system for the facilities he reviews.

Sample quote: "The King's Hotel had me all in a LATHER, and the complimentary bubble bath had a delightful aroma, reminiscent of a Summer morning frolicking naked on the Downs. I heartily recommend this place and award it FOUR rubber ducks out of five."

Now come on, who WOULDN'T watch that?

I'm honestly not so sure. I'd like it to work, but don't think it will. I love the idea of small radio stations (like Reverb).. get the right people on there and it can be as good as national radio on a much bigger budget.

But what you are talking about above - there simply won't be the budget.

In reality what restrictions ? They will still be subject to same OfCom rules and regulations.

Yes but BBC and ITV have targets to meet. I'm thinking of guys knocking up shows from their bedrooms. Remember the first Adam and Joe show? Could even work on the model that Reverb does where people interested in getting involved have to pay towards the cost of equipment etc.

That puts HB&B out of the equation in his quest for stardom because you cannot show tits on TV before 9pm.
