Maybe GP should give the the old fashioned 'fire up' a go? Whatever he's doing isn't working and he says he's all about learning, which implies doing things differently

Edit: Tongue in cheek

And make sure the tea lady leaves plenty of cups in the changing room

That is some management plan and a risky one too because if we took just 30% of our chances in the first half this season, a few teams would have some catching up to do second half!

Yes - but we don 't, and they know we won't. So, it's not a great risk. And also, they can just change earlier if we do get a goal.

I got Covid on 18/12 first. Day after work finished. Got steadily worse and Xmas day was a wash out. Hospital since boxing day. S
Still no sign of a release date

I don't ask for much from you normally.

But just this once, do something to cheer me up.

Score a ****ing goal. Win a ****ing game

I could do with a smile today

I think the concept of spending 15 minutes "firing up" the players is pretty much of a thing of the past for most modern PL managers. The majority of the half-time talk will be looking at videos of sequences of the match trying to make out what to do different. GP makes a lot of tactical tweaks and its possible some of those havent been too successful. But I think its tactical - except in some extreme circumstances the manager yelling harsh words for 15 minutes is most likely a thing of the past.

If we take a successful second half as example - its easier because its simply easier to see tactical changes that work out rather than the opposite - like the one against Fulham, it was obvious that Scott Parker ahead of the game instructed the team to make sure Brighton couldnt use the central defenders to switch sides. Rather than having your forward dropping down to make it more congested in the middle so that you cant use your central midfielders as easily, Fulham had their striker lingering with the Brighton central defenders to prevent switching sides through those.

In the second half, you could see that Brighton adapted to this reality. Rather than going from congested left side to central defense to the spaces on right side, you would see March and Lamptey (and others) try to do immediate passes to central midfield instead of going through the central defenders as you most often would, since Bissouma, Alzante and Lallana, since Cavaleiro didnt drop down to cover spaces in the middle.

Modern football really is more like chess than it is like boxing. In every single game you could see a staff member wired up (Hamberg in Brightons case) to some match analyst on the stands and that, right or wrong, will be the basis of much of the sideline/half-time talk. But of course Billy Reid will be calling everyone ***** on a regular basis, Im not sure about how much difference it does though.

Something I miss from the old days. The one that stands out for me was a game against Millwall and we were absolute shite first half on a nasty cold afternoon. At half time the team went down the tunnel and Alan Mullery told them to get back on the pitch, where they stayed until the second half started. We won 3-2

Are you telling me that a pissed off and angry manager has no place in the 21st Century? You are SO SO WRONG imo. Do they not have the expression “fire in the belly” in Sweden? This is exactly what Albion could do with in the second half of most games. Maybe the tactics talk and videos at half time sends them to sleep? Save it for the pre and post match chats

Well, that the old days : ) As I said you had a bigger of variety of personalities in a team back in the days. Today just because you have the talent like George Best or Paul Gascoigne, you still wont get anywhere unless you are a massively determined professional as well. Do I like that development? No... I think it would be nice if football was a bit grittier and more explicitly emotional. But its not really working out I think. In general I think todays players are more obsessed with winning than any other generation but it cant be expressed in the same manner. You could say that the way to express desire likely has changed from fire to focus. Go out with the idea of killing your opponents and you will get sent off the pitch, go out with the idea of staying calm and focused you have a good chance of winning.

I do have one concern with GP that seems to be a recurring thing recently.

We often tend to do well first half and look on top, even if we don’t score. However the number of times we have come out second half and been second best from the off is something that he can surely rectify, regardless of the quality of players we have on the pitch.

It’s happened against WBA, Saints, West Ham and Arsenal

It’s almost as if his half time team talk is “well played, more of the same lads” whilst the opposition managers seem to get their teams fired up and more committed than us in tackling and positive attacking. Potter needs to find a way to get us chomping at the bit from the off in the second half.

This being on the back foot from kick off in the second half is happening more and more often isn’t it? Or am I imagining it?

At the start of the season we were slightly under estimated and teams would go at us a lot more, allowing us to play our game and pass it around and capitalise on their players getting forward.

At some point it feels like managers have clocked GP’s style, and they’re more than happy to sit back the first half. Let us stroke the ball about, but because we’re toothless up front we can’t break them down. They happily soak it up and hope to get us on the sucker punch (seems to be set pieces mainly) and then we’ve had it as we can’t score enough.

It’s almost as if we’re a victim to the way we play. The solution to this is to learn how to break these teams down, not concede silly set piece goals, take our chances AND get that second goal. But obviously.. easier said than done.

When was the last time under Potter we went 2 goals ahead? I can’t even remember.

But come on Albion [emoji123]

Not to forget learning and taking the positives because that boosts the chances of winning even more, obviously.

Absolutely. Learning and focusing more on positives than negatives is the way to go, ask any sport psychologist. Only in some NSC:ers minds are "not learning" and "taking the negatives" something that will improve the team and results.

We can win today. We'll have a good number of main players back in the team so should have good spells of possession. The key is to change up the play so that we increase tempo of passing and not try to play like peak Barcelona. If we can create chances on counter attacks occasionally it will give the forwards opportunities without an entire team defending their box, which are better opportunities. I just hope we see some evolution to our style soon as the repetition of good but slow play and no wins is getting a little worrying.

We don’t like learning here.

Then why do we never win? Is he saying but not doing?
