Brighton guitar luthiers - recommendations?

Hi chaps

My Les Paul has a massively buzzy low E and noisy electrics. Needs a set up/service I think.

Anyone had any experience of either of these two?

I had another guitar set up at GAK recently and it was fine apart from the communication, which was shit, and the result, which was the action being higher than when it went in despite the exact opposite being specified on the job request. Not that keen to send my LP into there now.

Or anyone else skilled/trustworthy who's willing to pick up the phone and chat if something needs discussion?

Never had a setup done, but everything I've done with GAK has been super. Will be visiting next week hopefully to get a new Les Paul and Orange valve combo.

If you get a decent setup, I have an old Washburn and a Yamaha SG that could do with a good going over.

i personally have never had a problem with GAK setting my guitars up, by try this fella out hes probably one of the best in town and not expensive.

20 years ago there was a top bloke called Andy Demetriou. No idea if he's still around. Might be worth checking.

I've heard of but not experienced poor set ups from GAK. Bernie Goodfellow would be excellent but I've always struggled to get hold of him. I've used Bedrock in Burgess Hill before for my basses and always felt they have done a decent job. The absolute best is Charlie Chandlers.

I am after a decent acoustic guitar for Christmas as I have a cheapie electric guitar but I am teaching myself to play and all the web sites and YouTube tutorial videos recommend an acoustic

I think it's fair to say that your fingers get a better work out and your strength/precision therefore improves more quickly with an acoustic. It's also a fundamentally brilliant instrument in its own right, obv.

The only way to buy any guitar is to go and play lots of them and choose the one that you bond with best. Especially important with an acoustic guitar, where the variables are entirely limited to the guitar (more so than with an electric guitar where varying amps/effects can make a huge difference.)

Spot on, I used to use him for all my set up and repairs. Don't know if he's still around.

This thread has got me thinking that I've been really lazy recently. Antoria strat needs refretting and Blade tele is making a buzzy noise on low E time to seek some help me thinks.

Everyone i know used him and i know he did some great jobs on very expensive vintage guitars, but believe he retired about 5 years ago..

Just spent an enjoyable hour or so in GAK this morning, and bought myself a rather nice Gibson Les Paul - some very good information and advice from the very knowledgeable chappie that served me.

Whilst I was in there, I did happen to overhear someone asking about Luthier type work and I think the guy said that there is a specialist they use, that doesn't work for GAK, but comes in to the shop once a week to take on any work.

I tried a "V" once and found it a nightmare to hold. The balance didn't feel right, and the lower arm seemed to want to go places where it really shouldn't.

They did a reasonable job on my Ovation last year with a setup. Which I thought was a little expensive at £54.
And I have just got home after collecting my 40 year old Ibanez 12 String Jumbo from Music Room in Western Road. Pedro has done a bang up job of setting this one up. Now plays beautifully.
£205. including a Fishman Matrix Infinity (£150) internal pickup. It's amazing and you can't see a thing. Plugs into the tail strap button and the controls are hidden just inside the sound hole.
Would definitely recommend them. Also they let me have a go on a brand new Martin while I was hanging around.
(I haven't had a good loiter in a music shop for years.)
