As others have said, we are both similar sized clubs and fanbases.
We have had the upper hand for quite a few years now, but that's the beauty of a rivalry, you give it when you're on top ( ooh arr mrs ) and take it when roles are reversed.
The Brighton fans I've met socially have been good company, and I could relate to them more than some armchair expert.
Long live the rivalry, and may we be giving it for a few years yet

Never really liked you lot ,cant say its hate though but after this week it shocks me to say ,respect lads .

tbh Brighton and Palace have so much in common over the years that it would be strange not to have a bond,i don't think people went to to palace with hate in their heart just a bit of mischief and excitement along with a desire to get one over our northern cousins!:moo: Save the hate for something other than footie

I hate the word footie. :glare:

footie was a cool word 20/30 years ago but got hijacked by politicians etc pretending to be one of the lads. I won't raise the argument about 'soccer' again but for the record I think it's an acceptable word invented by the British and used a lot throughout the 20th century up until the mid 70s onwards. Americans use it to avoid confusion with their own form of football.

Never understand why some Albion fans hate teams like United, haven't played each other for donkeys years??? Not really any rivalry of the sort? Makes no sense to me! Have no problems with United, Arsenal, Chelsea etc.....

Why we hate United? Because of the cup final and the dirty cheating Norman Whiteside in particular. They cheated us. And I'm glad Rambow still has the QPR job.

It's a respect thing.

Like holding eye contact and urinating to assert dominance.

The truth is we love to hate each other, and I'd rather talk football to a knowledgable Nigel than some plastic City/Untied/Arsenal fan.

My thoughts exactly, despise BHA but rather talk football with a real Brighton fan than some tosser from the big five,I have lots of mates who are Brighton fans and we are basically the same I'm off to the twin tower memorial sight Sunday & I will be looking out for the Robert Eaton name to give my respects!

Or worse still. It would be like watching football in Australia or New Zealand. No singing, no banter, just people sat watching a game. Zzzzzzzz

That wasn't what it was like while I was out there. The Sydney FC crowd would put most clubs over here to shame. :)

I personally put money into a Palace fund to help keep them afloat, I cannot stand them, hate is a very strong word but in rivalry football terms I hate them

I hate Palace, but only as much as I love Brighton. On match days the feelings intensify.

Fair play, mel! I'm godfather to my Palace mate's twin daughters and they idolise my daughter who is of course an Albion fan! My stepsons, both Yeovil fans, took an Albion badge and message to the NY site before the rebuild. As luck would have it, they placed it only feet from where Robert's name was displayed, very lucky as there was no way of knowing where it would be back then. Good luck to you on your visit there, lots us will be with you in spirit.......

It's not a rivalry, it's what that club represents. They were the first club to market themselves as a brand, the first to tout themselves in the Far East, the first to open franchises selling their tat in high streets up and down the country, the first to go PLC, the main beneficiaries of Sky money. And the sense of entitlement that the club and its fans have.

You want to know what went wrong with football - just look at the history of Man U from 1980 to 2000.

Exactly my feelings towards Man U.

It goes a long way further back than that for me - probably when I first got into following football and the Albion and realised that there were people who claimed to 'support' some distant team rather than us for the simple reason that they were successful when Albion needed their support far more. And of course Manchester United, because of Munich, Best & Charlton and the European Cup win of 1968, were the beneficiaries, far more than any of the London clubs.

I have degrees of Manchester United-related loathing.

1. So-called fans who have only ever seen the Red Filth on TV.
2. Anyone who calls them 'Man United'. They do NOT represent all humanity. "Man U" is almost as bad.
3. Fans living outside Greater Manchester and who have no family allegiance who go to watch them. Support your local team.
4. Any player with another club who ever uses the word 'dream' when talking about the prospect of joining the Red Filth. My only dream about playing for them is the one where I deliberately score an own goal at the Stretford End that costs them the league title.
5. Most of their players. Sometimes you just have to look at some self-obsessed idiot footballer with a ridiculous sense of entitlement and know that he's born to play for them.
6. All those referees who never gave stonewall penalties to visiting teams at Old Trafford but couldn't wait to point to the spot as soon as Rooney threw himself over the nearest outstretched leg (even his own).

But I suppose they have given me some joy over the years. For example, the ages it took them finally to win the title, the looks on the faces of their fans at Sunderland (and Phil Jones) when Man City scored against QPR to deny them another undeserved title win the other year, their recent uselessness. But I can't imagine a time when I won't loathe them.

Are you a secret Scouser??

Nah. Not hard to explain at all. It's all just pantomime hatred. My feelings for Manchester United on the other hand...

I'm with you there. Some of my friends who are genuine Man U fans (i.e. not plastics but lifelong in the family and coming from Manchester) can't understand my utter detestation of their side, but it's been a part of me for more than 45 years.. I wanted Benfica to win the European Cup (as it was then) in 1968.

I wasn't old enough to be aware of the Munich air crash, but pure humanity would have transcended the hatred.

This. I have several friends who are Palace fans and have known a fair few down the years. Indeed, I can't say I've met any I've actually actively disliked.

So thank f**k for cpfc.org and in particular, their away fans end - a forum so dull that they ban opposition fans for the most trivial "infractions" imaginable. And then that proper sad away fans end, where there is one thread in particular about 1,000 posts long dedicated to sneering at people on here - many of them proudly announcing they know or have met NSC people in real life (when they are clearly lying) merely to give credence to their drivel. Absolute Nigel gimps, the lot of them. You will struggle to find such a collection of snivelling bell ends in one place anywhere else. Even RedCafe.
