Those two Alex Dawson goals came in a prolific spell when he got EIGHT in four league games. Not surprisingly, we won all those matches.

I was a kid, but remember that match well. The next programme had a photo of Alex Dawson flying horizontally through the air, with the caption "Black Prince in a snow storm"

Does anyone know why he was called 'the Black Prince of Football'?

The name gives it away

Like most of these things the truth is sometimes a bit of a let down but as I unstood it at the time, it was when he was younger and playing in Scottish Football he had really dark black hair, jet black in fact, and someone gave him the knickname when he started knocking in the goals.

Dawson was a battering ram of a centre forward in the mold of Bobby Smith. He got into the Man Utd team as a youngster after Munich, and played or Preston in the 64 cup final. Those were the days when Div 1 players were happy to wind own their careers in the lower divisions. Today they earn so much money that they don't have to do that any more or want more than clubs can afford.

...and helped get them to the FA Cup final, scoring a hat-trick in the semi v Fulham at Highbury. Sounds like quite a player!

My first ever footballing hero. Walsall were our bogey club for many years. I can remember our keeper Geoff Sidebotton unconscious for a few minutes in our penalty area during a 1-1 draw and no one could tend to him until the ball went out of play. The game has changed alright. Eddie Spearrit replaced him if I remember correctly. Actually that may have been part of the 5 games mentioned above.
I quite miss the days when goalies got a bit of stick ( not knocked unconscious btw) and Alex Dawson certainly gave them that.
