When are pubs going to return to routinely asking every time whether I want a straight or a jar ?

Friends have a property in France that they have been unable to visit since the covid outbreak and they are going soon for their first visit post brexit. They are unsure on the rules and regs of what can be taken to France and what can be brought back too, They may have to dump food they are bringing due to the phytosanitary rules the UK is subject to post brexit, also they are unsure as to what they can bring back with them in the opposite direction.

Gone are the days when they could simply load up with their favourite wines and food and bring it back without thinking. Of course it goes without saying that the time they could spend at their house in France is also reduced. Additionally they are uncertain about how thorough the French customs checks will be, previously it was simply a case of a cursory look in the boot or to be waved through without checks . So, absolutely NO benefits for them, things are worse and they will only find out the scale of the damage when they go.

You should tell them to stop being negative and move on with their lives, instead they can buy a holiday home in Australia and drive there instead

That will be down to the fact that we are totally incapable of implementing any of the import controls we were going to implement on Brexit (Remember Taking Back Control?) and currently look no more capable of implementing them than we did 9 months ago.

So another Brexit benefit. Well, at least it is if you are an EU smuggler or tax avoider

Remember the Northern Ireland Protocol conundrum that you promised to give more thought to 6 months ago. While you're on form, maybe you could spend a few minutes researching that now. Some may think that you've left it 6 years too late to do the research, but I like to think that learning new things is always beneficial
