I see Brexit has now reached the “going to war with France” stage of being fine...

think we should reflect on the attitude of the French to threaten cutting off electricity to 100k people, over permits for a couple of dozen fishing boats. i thought the europeans were supposed to be the grown ups.

I believe the behaviour of the French government since the UK left the European Union has only reinforced the decision of the majority that voted leave in 2016. Typical short man syndrome from Macron, Angela will break wind and he will come to heel.
It is worrying, the amount prominent remainiac loons that seem to be revelling in this latest tantrum from Macron... I thought James O’Brien was going to cuff one out live on air yesterday..

Perhaps this level of tension was inevitable now the UK has become a 'third country' competitor.

Not good and probably more of the same kind of divisive action to come.

Also there will be an inexorable wave of jingoism from nationalists on both sides of the channel.

Gunboat diplomacy from this UK government was also fairly predictable....

I’m not sure what the British government are supposed to do in this situation, the French fishermen, who have been out of control for some considerable time I might add, have threatened to blockade Jersey, British sovereign territory, we can all agree if the UK did nothing to protect the Island it would be bigger news than wallpaper gate?
Macron will back down, don’t you worry....he’s short.

How would you or I know what to do under the circumstances? We are not privy to all the details and cannot know what diplomatic tools are available.

Why do you think there is no measure that can be taken other than nothing or gunboat threats?

What you won't see in the right wing press........Chris Le Masurier, owner of the Jersey Oyster Company, described conditions placed upon the new post-Brexit fishing licences issued to Breton and Norman fishermen as ‘insulting and discriminatory’.

He said: ‘I will stand with them and take the Normandy Trader [boat] and be with them to take part in a peaceful protest. It has been an absolute disgrace by our government. It is about protecting people’s historic rights, livelihoods and friendships which have been forged over years.

Mr Le Masurier said he could not personally understand why the conditions had been imposed and who had decided they should be implemented.

He added: ‘Who invented this criteria? There is no rhyme or reason to it. It has also only been attached to French vessels, not Jersey’s, and under the rules of the Trade and Economic Co-operation Agreement both sides have got to be treated fairly. The government has left us wide open to facing an international disaster. I have now been told by the French not to land any shellfish or fish in French ports and that no commercial vessels will be allowed in either. Manche-Iles Express, Condor – everything would be impacted.

‘What a lot of people do not realise is that 90% of what is caught wild and farmed locally in Jersey is then exported to mainland Europe. There is one merchant who has bought lots of produce off the Jersey fishermen and had been planning to go to France either today or tomorrow – she has already paid them but it is just in tanks now. She cannot ship out [to Europe] and has had to tell fishermen not to go fishing. I have never known the situation with France to be so bad.’

The term ‘Gun boat’ is being used to ramp up tensions by the media, these are a couple of patrol boats with a pop gun on the front, they will normally be found jollying around the UK. Macron is desperate at the moment, he has the right wing Le Penn snapping at his heels, the French are desperate for Frexit and in all of this he has to be trying to impress Germany, Barnier negotiated, the EU 27 signed off on the deal, now he he is lashing out. He’ll learn.

Maybe, maybe not ...

But a macho response to 'our friends across the channel' is currently the populist route and does not bode well for either side; and to simplify the matter into 'Macron learning' is mere tabloidese.....

A polite request. I know everyone has their hobbies, but do you think you could cut out the constant references to self gratification ?

It’s all in the **** bank old son,all in the **** bank..
I always find a quick one off the wrist is always very calming.
I like to think so, I’m almost certainly the biggest and bestest wanker on here, I could quite easily compete at Olympic level..
You seem very insistent today Roger old son, might I suggest a little hand relief? I find it works wonders..

I can't help but wonder if the frequency with which you have recently taken to doing this, and Pastafarian re-appearing on these threads could be more than just coincidence. Thanks

And back on topic

Boris Johnson’s ‘madman’ strategy dumbfounded Brussels’ Brexit chief

Michel Barnier openly wondered whether Boris Johnson was pursuing a “madman strategy” in Brexit negotiations and came close to losing faith in the UK’s ability to keep its word during the gruelling talks, according to his diaries.

The EU’s chief negotiator for more than three years writes that the EU side was dumbfounded by the UK prime minister’s unpredictable approach — which Barnier refers to at one point as “political cinema”. Barnier speculated whether the British had simply sought to “give themselves another lever in the negotiations, ready to abandon it later. So, a ‘madman strategy’,” he writes.

At the December 2020 dinner this impression was underscored when Johnson floated the idea of striking a defence and foreign policy co-operation pact with the EU if a broader future-relationship agreement could not be found. Barnier quickly pointed out to Johnson that this directly contradicted the UK’s stated position against including these two areas in the future-relationship talks. Barnier says Johnson replied by asking his own team: “Who gave that order?” The Frenchman goes on to note: “The theatrics continue.”

It appears that Johnson's negotiating strategy was so ridiculous Basil Fawlty couldn't have done worse. Who knew ?

No surprise seeing Remainiac loons/5th column collective immediately siding with anyone but the UK though.

One of the indicators of how low we have spiralled in recent years is the re-emergence of small scale chauvinism; it pre-supposes that there is one kind of 'patriotism' and that is 'nationalism' .

In this perspective anyone who doesn't fit the same narrow, bigoted world view is interrogated about how much they 'love this country' and quickly dismissed as some sort or traitor if they don't fit the interrogator's infantile mindset...

it's a bit like the 'you're not a real Albion supporter' argument.

It is pathetic of course, but it's also a dangerous slippery slope that encourages exclusivity, dividing people and always ending unhappily....

I am impressed that you have noticed parts of the media trying to press your buttons, and you being able to resist. However, Frexit is not increasing in support, you are mistaking dissatisfaction with the EU with wanting to be out of the EU, this is how we got into this mess.
