But this isn't a football game.

The government is responsible for the welfare of all its citizens and thus major decisions such as Brexit have to be taken with a view to satisfying as many of the population as possible.

This is where democracy falls down sometimes. If they fudge a compromise to keep remain voters happy we'll end up with a solution that NOBODY wants!

The objective must be to negotiate the best deal possible, not try and placate remain voters.

The government is responsible for representing the will of the majority view of the people that voted in the referendum which they promised to do. Parliament voted six to one to give us our voice. Do you also expect Tory/Labour Governments to enact opposition policies after elections?

I think we'll have to disagree. I think any governments job is to act in the best interest of the people. The referendum has given them a mandate of some sorts. That is based on an undefined concept of leaving the EU.

It really doesn't matter what you say "Leave" means, or if ten of your mates agree with that definition. If it's not in the best interests of the nation as a whole, then that shouldn't be the course the government takes.

I personally would have preferred a referendum that had a variety of options regarding things like free movement of people, single market etc. That way the expectations put on parliament would have been clearer. But we didn't, instead we have this stupid mess.

Anyway Sidwells goal was magic.

This isn't an issue which appeared in a party manifesto is it. In that case parties lay out what they think is best for the country as a whole, usually within the parameters of the status quo, and act accordingly. The referendum was not based on a wide variety of issues but a single one, staying or leaving the EU, and crossed party lines in the process. The majority voted to leave and the government has indicated a willingness to follow this through. That is the will of the majority being acted upon.

What was not clear during the run up to the referendum because both sides acted like fvckwits whilst campaigning was how leaving would pan out and in this sense the government will have to act not just for the 17 million who voted to leave but also the 16 million who wanted to remain, the 12 million who did not vote and the 18 million which could not. There are regional fluctuations which need to be accounted for and above all else there is the future health and prosperity of the country to consider, both short term and long term.

So what should the government do about EU immigration , immigration from outside the EU,, trade deals within and without the EU etc etc etc. You may well be clear what you wanted when you voted, but I suspect that the others that voted may not share your view as there was no definition of what we should do ??

The Government now has a completely blank sheet to do whatever they want and claim the referendum gave them the power to do it. Soft or Hard, Right or Left. That's the point I'm trying (badly) to make. I've tired to stay out of this but you've dragged me in

Not manifesto's but both sides made specific statements/commitments. Number one ... both sides major players said Brexit means exiting the single market. Do you acknowledge exiting the single market is the bare minimum both sides would expect to happen on a Leave vote? The referendum was based on one question influenced by a variety of issues.

Agree both campaigns were predictably poor though.

I expect the government to end free movement and bring it in line with non EU immigration (#equality). The Uk will have the exclusive freedom to choose which deals and what terms future trade deals are made.

The Government has a scripted sheet of paper to secure the best deal possible for the UK, best deal defined as securing the will of the majority.

Glad your in , enjoy your non partisan contributions. :)

Yes, we are leaving the single market and the collective agreements signed within the EU. What it is being replaced with nobody yet knows but that decision will be based once more on what the current government thinks is best for the future prosperity and economic health of the country. I believe May has already indicated a position which certainly won't be WTO rules but neither will it be the Norwegian model.

I'm not a betting man, but I would bet money that you won't get what you voted for. The problem is nobody knows what we (as a nation) voted for. All we know is what we voted against

Agreed not ignored but they don't get to dictate/decide on the terms of our exit.

They may not get to dictate but there are some sections within our society which still have the means to make things difficult. The art of politics is to neutralise by getting to a point where both sides are happy and willing to compromise part but not all their ideals.

Broadly agree, at least its our government making the choices and if we don't like them we have a direct democratic way of holding them to account.

You are right I probably won't but I know I have a tiny chance in changing UK government policy through my vote but bu**er all chance of influencing/changing the direction of the EU.

Robinson Crusoe was very happy when he left his life as a castaway on his desert Island and returned to Europe with his black friend man Friday. No time for you to set yourselves adrift.

For desert island see how most countries exist ... Blimey that EU/establishment propaganda takes a lot of shifting.

It may have been a majority of the people that voted - but its definitely not the majority of people or rather the electorate. Those that did'nt vote and those that voted remain are the majority!
