I have just finished Breaking Bad and man that will take some beating.
I have not seen any of the others, so will try them out when I get time.

The Sopranos will always be number 1.

I'm not bothered by which is second or third, out of Breaking Bad and The Wire.

The West Wing in it's pomp was fantastic.

Of the newbies I really enjoyed Orange is the new Black.
True Detective has a hell of a lot to live up to.
Fargo was great but obviously there's an originality issue.

I'm yet to see House of Cards.

Good thread, can't argue with any of those chosen but Gameof Thrones has to be added. I also like Banshee, but I wouldn't say its a heavyweight like those mentioned. Ray Donovan is growing on me as well, also Blue Bloods....... could also throw in 24.

1. Breaking Bad (just finished it - phenomenal series)
2. Boardwalk Empire
3. The Sopranos
4. Game of Thrones
5. The Wire

Why does no one ever mention Mad Men?!?! Ridiculously underrated in the UK, it cleans up most years at the Emmys and golden globes. Well worth a watch, ridiculously clever.

Not sure why it's rubbish!

The Sopranos has to be no 1 but plenty of contenders

The wire
Breaking bad
Deadwood
Rome
Hell on wheels
Oz
Game of thrones
Boardwalk empire

Plus other great series
Walking dead
Sons of anarchy
Justified
Banshee
House of cards
Brotherhood
Underbelly
Luther
Line of duty
Tudors
Californication
Entourage
American horror story
Arrested development
Eastbound and down
Orange is the new black
Rake
Generation kill
Over there
Band of brothers
The pacific

Well I must get out more!

Another West Wing fan here - but clearly #3, with The Sopranos edging out The Wire for best drama series ever...
Enjoyed Breaking Bad a lot, but just isn't in the same class as the other 3.
Only seen 2 series of Boardwalk Empire - good so far.

And waiting for Mad Men to come out in a full box set. Got up to Series 4 or 5 on terrestrial TV with that - could be a top 3 challenger once I get to watch the lot over a month or two.

Check out The Shield

I was just about to have a bit of a rant about The Shield not being mentioned by ANYONE, and then there you go, top, top first post.

It would be in my top 3 with The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

Nobody's mentioned Luther, either, that I've noticed.

I've cancelled Sky as CBA giving the Digger £46 a month, does anyone know where the final series of Boardwalk can be found?

I think all four programmes are excellent, if I could only have one for a desert island would probably opt for The Wire, but only because I think it would stand up to repeated viewing the best.

I called Sky about a month ago to cancel and eventually agreed to renew for £23 for HD with a free HD box.

On topic: BB for me. Absolutely loved it.

I recently broke my foot and found myself with way more free time than is probably healthy. Anyway, I'd already finished the incredible Breaking Bad, and was up to date with Boardwalk Empire, so thought I'd catch up on the other two of the 'Top 4'. Finished both of them in a month (?!) and I had to check how the internet felt about all four series to see if my opinion was correct.

My list goes (and I think it's only fair to have seen every episode of each series to rank)
1) Sopranos
2) Breaking Bad
3) Boardwalk Empire
4) The Wire

I've checked other (nerdier) forums and I was amazed by how many people thought The Wire was the pick of the bunch. I'll go into why it's the worst of the four if anyone replies and I'm not hungover.

Never seen a minute of any of those. The ONLY US drama series I've liked so far is The West Wing and am currently going through all the episodes from the beginning on Sky Box Sets. Might venture into a different series once I've done all 156 episodes of that.

I don't really watch a lot of 'this type of thing' but I was addicted to Prison Break, I will get Breaking Bad this winter as everyone seems to recommend it. "Back home" most eagerly awaited for me was Mad Dogs, loved the cast, despite the ending, It s still one of my favourites

I've just finished the complete 'Breaking Bad' for the second time. And for those that loved it, it's just as good the second time around. In fact it was surprising to note how many little but important things I'd missed the first time.
I did read somewhere they might try making another one ... I hope so.
