I don’t understand. The rules are very clear. To work in the UK, you need the legal right to work. If you don’t have the legal right to work, you are working illegally.

If an employer hires people without the legal right to work and doing due diligence to get proof of this, they have broken the law.

It’s like the football betting with Ivan Toney. The rules are very clear. It doesn’t matter if people don’t like the rules, or they “have a point”, if you act outside of the very well established and known laws they will be punished.

It’s really not rocket science. Don’t hire people who don’t have the legal right to work. And if you don’t have the right to work and are caught working, expect to be punished.
Agree with all of this

I have to check right to work for all of my staff every year

There must be a fish angle in here somewhere.

The business could get battered in the courts if found guilty.
More likely an Italian food one.

It had seen other places do the same and wanted a pizza the action.

Businesses are struggling to recruit legally so doesn’t surprise me.
Shame as it is a Brighton institution, but bang to rights.
I would suspect this is a recent problem as I don't think they would have been in business over 30 years if it was a regular occurrence

Think it will get sorted, the hospitality industry has huge staff shortages, (Thank you Nigel Farage), this puts a marker down for all the local bars and restaurants coming into the Festive season.

Is it any worse than this from 2019?

That all got finished with minimal fuss, I don’t think any serious fines were levied.

Bit harsh Lenny, Nige only had the one vote for Brexit, same as yourself

Despite their Albion connections, and great pizzas, you have to follow the law . Sorry but no sympathy.
Hospitality is a sector which has been hit by the quadruple whammy of Brexit, Covid, a government which is utterly inept at business and now the cost of living crises. In the grand scheme of things this isn’t crime of the century. Do I have sympathy for a hospitality business trying to get through, totally yes.

Might you feel differently if they were working excessively long hours and being paid below minimum wage? Because that is very often the case with illegal workers, with no rights.

They might have hoped the Home Secretary wouldn't notice, but they couldn't get it pasta that easily

I hope the CPS see sense and don’t Prosecco-cute.

This is true, but we don't know whether this was the situation in the present case. If it was then Donatello's should remove themselves 200 yards southwards.
