Bradford Park Avenue. Another club which sent me free goodies and a nice letter from the manager in the 60's when I wrote to them as a 9 year old.

Just swithced on. The Greens (Bradford) seem to be going mad. Have they scored? Then an advert came up.

There is only one division seperating Bradford PA from Bradford City now.

Interesting fact about Bradford Park Avenue ...

They first played the Albion in 1907/08, when both teams played in the Southern League. At the end of the season, Bradford (who finished 13th) and Tottenham Hotspur (who finished 7th) were elected to the Football League. The Albion finished 17th. Queens Park Rangers were champions.

Bradford P A were always seeking re-election when I first started watching football. They were the first team I recall being kicked out of the league. They were replaced by Cambridge Utd.. I think.

One question. Why on earth were BPA playing in the SOUTHERN League back in 1907?

They had applied earlier to join the Football League, but were unsuccessful. When Fulham were elected to the Football League in 1907, Bradford obviously saw this as the way to achieve their ambitions and therefore applied to replace Fulham in the Southern League.

Bradford have an interesting history. They started as a Rugby Union team, called Bradford Football Club. When the northern rugby clubs left the RFU to form the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, Bradford went with them. But at the same time, they also formed an Association Football club. The rugby club and the football club split away from each other in 1907, the rugby club going on to play rugby league (as Bradford Northern) and the football club joining the Southern League.

I see. Strange that the Southern League allowed them to join. It must have been a pain for non league sides to travel up to Bradford.

Second interesting fact about Bradford Park Avenue ...

There is no street in Bradford called "Park Avenue". The old Bradford FC stadium was in Horton Park Avenue.

The new Bradford Park Avenue don't play there. They play at Horsfall Athletics Stadium.

Oy! Less of the "non-league"!

In 1907, the Southern League was one of TWO leagues of equal status ... The Football League and The Southern League. It was only later (post WW1) that the FL finally achieved its superior status, when they absorbed the leading Southern League clubs, to become a proper national league.

Never forget that Brighton & Hove Albion as Champions of the Southern League beat Football League Champions Aston Villa in the Charity Shield which at that time was played between the Champions of the two Leagues.

Well I've learned something new today.
