If you look, there is hardly a mention of this at all in the media.

What is so different from the events that happened at Hillsborough to those that happened at Valley Parade? Surely they both deserve the same coverage.

Well, for starters, it's the 24th anniversary - not a landmark. Also, it's not surrounded in the same kind of controversy.

Not a great deal. Both tragedies saw a catastrophic failure in the authorities to ensure the safety of its customers, resulting in multiple deaths. I'm sure there is a lot of bitterness and rancour amongst the friends and relatives in Bradford who lost loved ones in that blaze, but you never seem to hear from them - or at least, they don't get the coverage.

Liverpudlians are professional grievers though.

I remember watching it on TV as a kid. I think they went over live from either Grandstand or the final score programme Tony Gubba used to read the day's headlines out on. At first there was a little smoke and a few flames and it was pointed out on camera but almost in passing in the same way these days a commentator will point out a small fracas in the crowd and say he hopes it doesn't escalate and get out of hand. The next thing you know it was well and truly ablaze and out of control.

I remember reading about it in the paper the next day and one guy was able to rescue one but not both daughters and he had to choose which one to save. Heartbreaking tragedy which I think still gets to me because I was about 12 and it was the first tragedy I had ever seen though luckily for me it was only on TV.

numbing, the clip of the person walking along head to toe on fire just stomach churning, gotta hand it to the police in that video, they were dragging folks away from that inferno 6 mins into it.Condolences to the families of those that lost their lives.

Question is: why not? Hillsborough has stayed alive in the public conciousness because Liverpool feels that an injustice had occurred - that somebody should be held accountable for the deaths. Bradford doesn't feel that way - why?

That was just the grimmest of days, I remember it very well - it somehow had more impact than Hillsborough. The main access to that stand was from a corridor at the back and most who died had headed there...can you imagine. As if that wasn't enough, someone attending their first ever game died in a crush when a wall collapsed amid rioting at St Andrews on the same day I seem to recall. They were about to knock that stand down after that game too.

It would have been easy to point the finger at Bradford City were it not for the fact that every single ground in the country had similar pockets of neglect at the time.

I know, we all get a bit nostalgic when we see old packed-out and ramshackle grounds of that era, I do. But they were bloody death-traps too - thank god the stand at Bradford didn't have big fences on the front like the ones on most of the noisily-lamented terraces - including the ones at the Goldstone - otherwise just about everyone in that stand would have died, about 2-3000 people.

It really is shameful by the Beeb, 3 weeks before Hillsborough they were already were filling the Football section with articles for it, yet on this very day, there are only two for Bradford. Both of which you would have to navigate to the League Two section just to find and one of which was a 4 years old article. However you cannot take away the dignity Bradford has dealt with their loss. An event that haunts me to this very day and the images that I saw are forever embeded. 56 went to celebrate their team's success on winning the division 3 title and never returned.

What's striking about that list is that the dead are almost without exception either the very old or around their teens
You can pick out the families there too, dads and children all killed together.
Just ordinary footie fans like you or I.

This must have brought it all back to both sets of supporters, the first time Bradford played Lincoln after the tragedy.

When R M Taylor and his brother Robert were still youngsters I made a point of showing them the plaques at Valley Parade and Hillsborough and tried to explain that tragedies can happen at football matches which is difficult when they are 7 and 8.

the older fans, the families and the younger ones would have been in the seats at the back and because of the dividing wall went to the back of the stand, those standing at the front went onto the pitch.
once at the back with locked gates and no way back through the fire...............

A truly awful day and it happened at a packed ground as City where enjoying their final home game as champions.

As stated earler, just as well there were no fences. back then football fans were mainly treated with contempt by the authorities. Sadly it took Bradford & Hillsborough to bring about the safety standards we enjoy today.

I'd seen the video via a mate thats a fireman (well, fire brigade ambulance driver). The time is what astounded me, less than 5 minutes from being noticed to the stand being completely engulfed.

Horrific way to die. RIP.

an awful awful tragedy and another avoidable one. The poor fella on fire still makes me shudder when I think about it. The same with any football disaster, it could have been any of us.

Its probably not appropriate on thsi thread but f*** it - perhaps all of those so outraged at the galatasary flag on saturday should perhaps remember the leeds fans who set fire to the burger bar and taunted bradford fans a few months after the disaster, bless them.

the brother of a guy who is two seats along from our season tickets at er was at valley parade that day, he died. he was with his wife and two or three children. he got separated from his daughter and went back to get her, their bodies were found together by the turnstiles. they were only identified because she was wearing some jewellery that didn't burn or melt.

truly horrific. we were at birmingham that day and had no idea what happened until much later that night when we crossed paths with some arsenal fans at the services on the way back.

Didn't Leeds fans torch the chip van at the Odsel (sp?) Stadium the following season? Funny bunch that lot.

Way out west
I was shown the video as part of my annual fire training at work a fair few years ago, in fact it wasn't that long after the event...the bloke leading the training put the video on as he started his speil about what our training would involve, then rounded off by pointing to the screen and telling us that in the same amount of time he had been talking there were 56 lives lost in the Bradford fire...it kind of focussed our minds on our day's training.

In fact, this seems like a good point to remind everyone of the importance of having working fire alarms in their homes...if you don't have any then go out and buy some, if you do, carry out a functional check to make sure they are still working. I know that it is normally the job of soon to be LFftr Nylon to remind us of fire safety but it seems somewhat appropriate on this thread...so sorry if I am stealing his thunder!!!
