"NEW ORLEANS – BP froze activity on two key projects Wednesday meant to choke off the flow of oil billowing from its broken well in the Gulf of Mexico after days of moving confidently toward controlling the crisis.

The development was a stunning setback after the oil giant finally seemed to be on track following nearly three months of failed attempts to stop the spill, which has sullied beaches from Florida to Texas and decimated the multibillion dollar fishing industry.

The oil giant and the government said more analysis was needed before testing could proceed on a new temporary well cap — the best hope since April of stopping the geyser. Work on a permanent fix, relief wells that will plug the spill from below with mud and cement, also was halted.

Oil continued to spew nearly unimpeded into the water, with no clear timeline on when it would stop. BP shares were down 2.5 percent in afternoon trading in London after recouping some of their oil spill losses earlier this week, when the cap project seemed to be moving ahead"

More bad news for BP. Not hit bottom yet.

July 14 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc should stop a planned drilling campaign in Libya while links between the oil producer and the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi are investigated, a group of U.S. Senators said.

BP could be banned from new American offshore licenses, which would f*** it up big time. Not as risk free as you might think.

theres some nice posturing from some politicians on that idea, but it would be challenged legally and probably not pass any bill, as its pretty anti-business and un-american. BP is in fact 40% US owned, and they probably wouldnt like it so damaged it falls in to Chinese or Russian ownership.

the "stunning setback" is case of poor sensationalist reporting methinks, of course they would test that the application of the new cap would work properly and wouldnt cause a rupture somwhere. there are two relief wells about ready to complete as i understand, which would take off the pressure and probably reduce the leack to a trickle anyway. its near the end *and* ahead of schedule.

If you don't mind waiting a few years then it may not be a bad investment.

It is a good investment, as are the banks now, RBS will fully recover and some.

If you want a good punt take a look at local pharma company Allergy Therapuetics AGY

IF 'Ding Dong!' timed it well, he could have made a c33% return in the last 2 weeks as BP surged from 300p to over 400p a share. That's not bad going at all but you need a fair amount of luck to have timed it like that. (And it is luck, not skill)

Doesn't seem as "bad" as you make out?

More cash to be made (albeit at higher risk) company calles Asia Digital. Currently trading at about 0.3p. Have been up to 25p a couple of years ago and are on the up.
