The government are the ones who are making money out of fuel!

Around 50p a litre is duty, VAT is 20%

It cost around 25p a litre to make it - which leaves about 7p a litre for the retailer...

I know where my anger is directed!

Is something missing from your figures? 50p plus 7p plus 25p = 82p plus 16.4p (20%) total 98.4p. There seems to be a missing 37p. Does your 25p include transportation and the like?

Ignore ,I've just reread your post

Yep - I was reading it from an article from when petrol was below £1 a litre, have a look at the second post with the link to the guardian web site and you'll get a more accurate account...

One thing which has changed is how much more expensive petrol in the UK is than the US. Not that long ago it was about 3 times more expensive in the UK. If you take the typical price in the States today it is about $4.00 for a US gallon compared to about £1.30 a litre in the UK– if you convert the US price to a litre, factor in the smaller US gallon and current exchange rate the costs are

US = $1.06 a litre and UK = $2.13, now twice as expensive.

So the relative price of gas in the States has shot up and the Yanks are actually having to come to terms with something called mpg with they never gave a monkeys about before. The days of the gas guzzling SUVs and Hummers are over. They are expecting a drop of 20c a gallon in a few weeks.

The price we pay for petrol in this country is extortionate...both the government and the oil companies are laughing all the way to the bank.

So why do cars and engines just keep getting bigger and bigger ?
and why did people continue to participate in motor sports ?

A strange response to extortion don't you think ?

The cost of cars (making them) is coming down proportionally to the cost to run them.

Motorsport is a hobby in which the price of fuel is probably the least of their expenditure. It certainly is ours.

Many people see a car as a necessity not as a luxury. Therefore oaying for fuel is like the weekly grocery shop, imperitive.

The price of oil had a record drop yesterday down 15 dollars a barrell and these 3 companies have put the prices at the pump up again:tantrum: you c u n t s

The price of oil now they should be charging 1.24 a litre not 1.38

These companies make billons time for the goverment to sort these greedy bastards out:tantrum:

As Clapham Gull has already pointed out they make hardly any money from the £1.38 and as you say below its 9p so £1.29 is going to the Government etc blame them not the oil companies.

that is not correct I was a area manager at BP for 8 years and we made 9p a litre at the pumps but used to say it was just 1 pence to the public

You mucked up your argument you say they should reduce the price by 14p but if they are only making 9p a litre then why would they drop that to -3p a litre :annoyed: where are they going to make their money from. Also at £1.38 a litre it is still cheaper the Coca-Cola.

i would love to know how many petrol stations are making 9p a litre profit on petrol. i know that most stations that have to pay oil companies for there fuel are only making 1-2p per litre,to stay competitive. 9p a litre is cloud cuckoo land obviously bp must charge there own stations a lot less for fuel than other retailers.

they dont, typically. the average person doesnt engage in motorsport as it is and always has been a preserve of the wealthy (or those in motoring trades). they drive an average car like a 2L Mondeo, Golf, Megane, Corolla or such like, same or marginaly larger than 15 or 20 years ago, but a hell of a lot more fuel efficent with multi-valve and multipoint injection engines. lots of people go for the little compact/subcompact cars like Jazz, Twingo, Aygo with small 1.2 or lower engines precisely as a responce to ever increasing fuel costs.
