Don't build it- we might get invaded.

He's only on the Council of Europe.

Just far enough away from LDC
When the channel tunnel was proposed, there were 3 plans that went to final decision. All were rail based as the issue of changing lanes a la scalextric was deemed too risky

Two of the final 3 plans were some form of bridge. One was a part bridge that submerged to a tunnel about a third of the way across. The other was a full bridge.

issues with shipping ruled out the last one and issues with cost ruled out the part bridge

Muddled thinking. Was this comment made in the morning, or after a particularly good lunch? Where to start?

1. He announces the most ambitious engineering project the UK will ever undertake in the same week that our second largest building company goes bust.
2. He wants a bridge to promote trade with France having masterminded the Brexit campaign.
3. He has a track record of big ideas that have flopped.
4. Who is going to pay for it? We can't even afford HS2.
5. The bridge idea has been considered and binned before - nothing has changed. Is he aware of this?
6. The only countries that can pull off this type of project - China / Russia - have cheap labour and a complete disregard for the environment - we have neither.

Let's not allow years of careful investigation, planning, costing and risk assessment get in the way of a jolly Boris wheeze.

classic diversion tactics, probably the only positive job May can find for him.

"We're being hammered over the NHS, Carillion etc, we need to speed up the news cycle and get something else out there. What we need is an ambiguous statement, the sort of thing which we can't be held accountable to or when it starts to be taken seriously we can say that is was taken out of context. We'll let the press hype it up and they won't want to look stupid when people realise it was a non-story that they should have been more responsible in clarifying in the first place, so they'll drop it".

"A well placed leak then? We'll have Boris mention something about taxing certain types of dogs or something, in private, because people trust leaks. People think leaks are always caused to the dismay of the powers in charge, as opposed to often being deliberately created. But not dogs, no, something big and spectacular which will mean it'll eat up the news cycle so folk will soon forget about the NHS and Carillion at least for the moment"

"Ok, we'll go for the bridge idea. Ensure we have Boris saying something about dogs though, just in case something else goes wrong this week".

Maybe he just misheard the lyrics to that Wax single and thought it sounded like a good idea.

As the thread title suggests, they've wheeled him out to spout this bullshit to distract attention and everyone has fallen for it. He's a usefull clown.

It would have to have two tunnels mid channel to allow them to cross each other to change driving on the left to driving on the right and vice versa.

I think this is true Boris fantasy. Why? Even the plans for a Garden bridge in London fell through due to spiralling costs.

BBC going big on Boris's latest idea of a bridge built to France. We can't seem to build a by-pass round Worthing or get HS2 moving so how the hell will we do this when the country is allegedly skint ? Boris has form for grand ideas that cost a packet and don't get made, see The Garden Bridge and Boris Island for examples, what a pillock.

Moan about Brexiteers being isolationist then moan about them wanting to build bridges with continental Europe ... *tut* :D

By the time this could be built - say 15 years at a push we should be living in a world of autonomous vehicles- this would massively increase the capacity of ports and the channel tunnel as operators will be able to increase productivity without the need for driver breaks etc as lorries form and move in convoys outside of commuter hours.
Boris is a dinosaur...the future is not about building massively expensive shiny new things but utilising technology to make best use of and optimising the infrastructure we already have.

This is a great, innovative idea... and that's why it will never happen.

For those who are suggesting that the shipping lanes or high winds would be an obstacle; they wouldn't. There are technological solutions to these kinds of problems as demonstrated in bridges around the world.

Implemented well, it would be a huge boost to both economies and over time would pay for itself... but it will never happen, not in my lifetime. Shame.

This. It COULD be built but the huge cost will prevent it happening. The money spent would be far better spent on our internal infrastructure.
