for those who have fast cars , i just purchased a full tank of 99 ron (not 97) petrol at tescos for £1 a litre. the difference is huge. not sure if it works for all cars but my car was apparently designed for 99 ron as its a jappo car.

What car is it? If its a Nissan Almera then its not worth the 99RON :p

Also, I'm wary of Tesco fuels after the story about them rotting away fuel lines, so I stick to V-Power in my GT4.

If you car is mapped for 98RON, as Japanese performance cars can be, its of benefit.

If its not, its entirely a placebo effect. Virtually all petrol sold over here is 99 octane and nobodies noticing their normal cars turning in to rockets - until you tell them its 99 octane, then suddenly their cars apparently get faster. My car has adaptive mapping and the difference is tiny, but the 99 burns cleaner and is exactly the same price as 95 so I use it.

As goes Jap cars, JDM import Subarus are reknowned for eating engine components if you don't run them on 98/99 octane....

I have driven Alfas for years and they definitely benefit using the 99/super fuel. Better mpg and performance. I have never used supermarket fuel as I'm not convinced it's of the same quality as Shell or BP, maybe I've been takne in by the hype but hey ho

Not only do I get better performance from running on Premium, I get better MPG which pretty much compensates for any difference in the price at the pumps.

We use 105RON in the race car and it has been known to go in the road cars every now and then with noticeable difference. We can get anything up to 119RON although at £2.9 a litre its a trifle steep....

99 RON at tescos? id be very suspcious of that, but then im sure they'd get an almighty bollocking if telling fibs.

(without looking at google) RON measures the fuels resistance to "knock" or exploding rather than burning. a higher RON means you can put more air in a get more power/more economy depending on the car. most decent injection systems with a Lambda sensor will automatically adjust the fuel/air mixture with higher RON so making the car more effecient, unless you change the mapping for power. 99RON should be about 3-4% more economical than 95RON and probably a little better at pick up in speed, i doubt it changes performanc much with out some specific tweeking to the mapping.
