Bissouma - Radio Sussex and 5live commented frequently on his awful performance, with additional adjectives of he looked like he didn’t care, strolled around, lazy.

His excuse was?

Once he fails with his first two-three actions he loses all confidence and can't recuperate. I don't think he was lazy, I think he was hiding. Pretty sure he would have been subbed in half time but that Potter thought it would have destroyed him.

About Bong.. Not good enough but tries hard, can't really get mad at him. He seems to have great mentality though, keeps trying despite his failures. Maybe put his brain in Bissoumas body.

Very poor performance that gave the impression that we did not want to continue in the cup. Started early on when Maupay rounds the keeper and does not even try to get his shot off into an empty net. Nobody wanted to shoot. Most people had a mare but Bissouma Stephens Balogun and Bong were particularly bad. Only the goalkeeper came out of this game with any credit. Even GP has to take some blame for a performance like that. A lot of young kids came to this game and probably for the first time. What was served up was a disgrace.

Bong did the things he was asked to do last season and the previous 3 or so seasons absolutely fine.

The things he is being asked to do this season is beyond his skillset. We've moved forward and he hasn't been able to keep up.

Absolutely no need for ridiculing the fella. No need at all for clapping and cheering when he is being subbed. He's played however many games for us, he's never bottled a challenge, never given less than his all.

Like others have said, there were plenty of other bad performances today

Absolutely this. Generally been a class defender, and solid enough in the Prem. Never really had any ball skills, passing technique or crossing ability and that is really going to stand out in a Potter team.

Glad to see that a few other posters have acknowledged the unfairness in singling out Bong, a free transfer who over the past 4 years had quietly got on with the job expected of him and by the looks of it been a good team person. Clearly he has no long term future and would not fit the Potter style of play, but there's no need to ridicule the guy. Interesting to contrast the treatment of Bong with that of Bissouma, who is hero worshipped by many despite producing little of substance over 1.5 seasons, and was absolutely dire today (as he was also against Chelsea, though he was decent against Bournemouth).

Not sure he should be singled out any more than the other 7 or 8 utterly crap players

Indeed. In fact, in an attacking sense, he was more involved than just about anyone in the first half. But, hey, it's Gaetan Bong. Every mistake gets seized upon and amplified. Never quite understood why so-called 'supporters' need to have a scapegoat.

Let me first be clear, Bong has been a good player for us, and was consistently solid defensively when we got promoted from the Championship, but today surely has to be his last game for the club.

He looked completely out of his depth, was beaten by a simple long ball two or three times, and when given the chance to cross his final ball was abysmal. If we can't sell him I think we'd be best paying up his contract and seeking another left back in the current transfer window.

Poor yesterday l will agree, but there is no chance of the club paying up his contract, or l feel of him being let go anywhere during this transfer window, with only one fit senior left back, Bernardo, at the club.

Never had any ball skills? I think that's a pre-requisite to make it as any sort of footballer don't you? He must have some!

It looks like his best isn't now up to the level we require as a progressive-looking Premier League club, but to vilify him in the way some have and do is pretty disgusting.

Some close to us cheered when he was subbed off yesterday. They were the same ones who were on his back from his very first touch. He could have scored a hat-trick yesterday and they'd still have found fault in his performance.

Yep - and as I said before, the abuse he received from 3 or 4 people at the Chelsea away game was vile. Calling your own player a c*** every time he touches the ball. He has never let us down with his attitude so this behaviour is disgusting.

Another thread slagging a player off who was integral to our side not so long ago. One who can still compete, even at this level, in certain systems.

Yes we have moved on. He simply does not have the attributes to play the way we are playing now. That can surely be discussed without calling him shit and worse.

Can tell some of the utter wankers on here were the ones cheering when he was subbed. Pond life.

Thought he was hung out to dry yesterday was never going to show his best in that attacking position so hard to get on his case for showing what we already knew were his limitations.

Whilst he won’t have a future with us another strong and reliable part of our promotion team and has always been a top professional at the club.

Yep, absolutely disgraceful from some of our 'fans'.

Everybody seems to have missed the worst performance of all being that of Balogun. He looked like he didnt care and had no interest in the game whatsoever and more worrying looked as if he didnt know what he was supposed to be doing or where he was playing. At least Bong tried to do something constructive and stopped a number of attacks confidently.

He most certainly wasn't the only one who didn't have interest in the game.

Stephens, our captain, was shying away from challenges and not doing his usual legwork from the first minute.

Bissouma used the match to try and see if he could take the piss out of lower league opposition, in the end they took the piss out of him. An absolute disgrace.

Connolly came on the pitch and jogged around like it was a ****ing training session.

These are the things that make me angry far and beyond players who are simply not good enough to play this way - like Bong, Schellotto.

Most sensible comment I have read relating to this unnecessary opening thread and previous threads on Bong. A great servent for the club, always gave his all, and committed in every way. If he does move on, will probably not be as fondly remembered as the other championship players in those seasons leading to the premier - which is a pity.
The club, team, and style of play has moved on and as mentioned, how he was asked to play by Chris - he delivered at that period/style of football. Yes - disgusting re the clapping and cheering re the substitution yesterday, not good at all to see.
