Lord Bracknell
On fire
The alternative view of the Gunpowder Plot is that the King and his government happily allowed it to proceed as far as it did, in order to justify the suppression of Catholicism for the next 200 years.
we're not though, we are celebrating the failure of terrorism

Does Catholicism even need to be suppressed... more than they suppress themselves?
Not that they are much worse than many other repressive obsessive dis-orders of the cross with themselves and everyone else.
By burning and blowing things up ! .. and celebrating the name of the person who decided to do.

I like the fact we still have this day and no-one is quite sure why. But suggesting it's a yearly peace campaign is somewhat, ...well....
Where has anyone claimed its an annual peace campaign? Its an annual rememberance of the failure of a terrorist attack against the King and the Government of this country where they burn and blow up effergies of Guy Fawkes and (sometimes) some or all of the other conspirators and also celebrate the plots failure with firework displayss.
The bonfire prayer
Remember, remember the Fifth of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes 'twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament
Three score barrels of powder below
Poor old England to overthrow
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holler boys, holler boys, ring bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys, God Save the King!
- Hardly celebrating Guy Fawkes is it.
