Ive been kind of considering donating Bone Marrow to the Anthony Nolan Trust, anyone got any experiences of doing this? What should I expect, whats the actual process like?

I have no experience of actually donating but was on the register as I was a regular blood donor. I assume your blood gives a good indictation of a possible match and then the next stage would be a small sample of marrow to confirm match? If donation confirmed then i think they use large needles. ?

do it. do it. do it.

my daughter lived for as long as she did because of the anthony nolan register and because of a perfect stranger who gave so much to help her live.

i am on the register but have never been called. you just have to fill in the paperwork - medical history type stuff and then go to one of their clinics and give blood, if you can't make it to one they will send you the bottles so you can get your GP/local hospital to take the blood, then you get put on the register.

the actual marrow donation is much easier, quicker and not as painful as a lot of people think, they just make one or sometimes a few more holes over your pelvic bone, they pop a hollow needle in and suck out the stuff they need to.

please register. it's something we believe passionately in. anastasia lived for a year because of a perfect stranger who got off his arse and put his details on the anthony nolan. you really can be the difference between life and death.

Albion Dan, if you've got as far as thinking you might do it, you really must go through with it. I registered a long time back and the initial sample was no big deal at all, nothing like donating blood. Its a no lose situation, you may well never hear from them again so its not an ongoing 'hassle' but if you get as far as matching you may well get to save a life and that wouldn't have happened without you. Some years after I registered, my mates daughter died from leukemia. There was obviously nothing I could say or do to make him feel any better about what had happened but it meant a little bit to me to know i'd done about the only thing I could have. Get yerself down there!!

Can I help?

We're extremely pleased that you've asked yourself if you can help, because we are always looking for new bone marrow donors to help save the lives of people who desperately need a transplant. Before you can become a donor though there's some important information you need to read and some things that we'll need to ask you too, but for now all we need to know is:

Are you aged between 18 and 49?

and

Have you, or are you prepared to give blood?

If you answered yes to both these questions, then - providing there are no medical reasons that prevent you from doing so - you may well be able to become a bone marrow donor. Just click here to be taken to our online enquiry form and we'll send you more information and details of where you can go to register.

Thank you for taking the time to find out whether you can save a life.

I am not certain if a transfusion affects your ability to donate marrow. I want to say yes because my sister has had a tranfusion but was also tested as a match for Anastasia. Next time you see your GP ask or maybe you could email Anthony Nolan and ask, they are super helpful.

And yes you have an anaesthetic when you donate marrow.
