Bone Marrow Donation - I'm a match!

I've been on the BBMR (british bone marrow register) for the last three years and I got a letter yesterday telling me that I'm a potential match for someone.

I'm ringing the "Head of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory" in a few minutes but I'm just wondering if anyone on here had been picked and had gone through this procedure.

If I'm a match then I'm going to do it anyway (so you won't be putting me off) what's a few days discomfort for me compared to the suffering of someone with Leukemia or Aplastic Anemia (sp?).

Cheers

No, but a good friend of mine did a couple of years ago and if you want any advice, then I can give you his email address. The girl he helped is in remission and healthy (touch wood).

Well done CMR

We've been on the receiving end of marrow donation, my daughter would not have lived as long as she did without it.

I hope you are a match and can give a wonderful gift to someone, somewhere.

Well done.

Well done Captain. I've been on the register for a couple of years (a family friend needed a bone marrow transplant due to a very rare form of leukaemia) and they held a session in hove for all his freinds and family. The argus and radio covered it in detail and the local fire brigade turned up to register too.

He got a match from Hungary a few weeks after and is now recovering.

It always seems kind of ironic that something so simple for one set of people can mean something so major for others. I've often thought about the benefits of an opt out donor register (for all things not just marrow) rather than an opt in one as we have now.

I'm on the register too, I hope that I could in the future help save a life.

Hope you enjoy the massive hip needle ;)

Too old to be on the Register myself (50) but I stand and cheer on the sidelines with all the other coffin-dodgers. Well done Captain (and the others who are on it as well).

Cheers people.
I've just rung up - they have enough DNA to test to see if I'm the exact match they're looking for - it'll take 12-14 weeks she said.
She asked me if I'm 'available' in the next three months.... I said "yes"

So it's a case of waiting to see now.........................watch.........this..........space!

I've got to the first stage a couple of times, all you need to do at Stage one is to get your GP to take some blood and send it back for more tests.

I done this about 4 weeks ago, and haven't heard yet whether or not I'm required for the next stage.

Not a 'hero' at all. It might involve a bit of pain if I do get called upon, but that's nothing compared to giving someone the chance to extend their life.

I lost my Brother to Leukaemia many years ago, he had a transplant that failed.

To me, going on the register was a no-brainer

Something I'd love to be able to do, but I'm not allowed (for the same reasons as I can't give blood), utmost admiration for those that do.

How does one go about registering? I signed up for summat or other when I joined my union but don't think it was this....
