Bodrum, Turkey

Just come back from a week here (Gumusluk, Bodrum Peninsula).

Wanted to go to Antalya or Olu Deniz, but Bodrum was the only available for the dates i wanted to go.

I didn't realise it was so expensive here (and you get so little for your money), i dont like to moan but its the same as english prices if not more expensive, i've heard many people go there to avoid the euro, but it didnt make a shread of difference for me.



If it was my choice and i had more time available i would have definately gone to my fave country after England and that is the wonderful land that is Thailand. A truly wonderful country.

If any one has any Negative/positive feedback on Turkey or other countries i'd love to hear them

Additionally i'd love to hear anyones views on the wonderful Thailand, Has any one been and if so what has your experience been of it?

Have been to turkey about 15 times in the last 10 years.
Like most places cheap meals and beers can be had but you
will always pay more if you eat/drink in the prime location venues
ie Harbourfront or main square.
The best value day out in Turkey are the boat trips.
Get down to the harbour about 10 and have your haggling head on.
This year we got about 7 hours at sea ,stopping 5 or 6 times for a swim
including bbq lunch and all your beer/soft drinks for the entire day at
a cost of £5 each.

I guess i just couldn't be bothered to haggle (i always do in Thailand and Far East and grab bargains) co i paid 300 lira £130 for an all day private boat trip

Yeah I went to Olu Deniz last year - absolutely fabulous place, but not cheap at all.

That's bloody brillio! We paid 12 quid each for the same thing in Icmeler this summer and thought that was good value.

Paid about £8 each in Bodrum in 1994. It's all about the haggling.
The currency was worth a lot more then, there was about 20,000,000 to the pound.

Went to Bodrum last month. The Turks aren't stupid - in the resorts that are predominently booked up by UK travel companies they have hiked their prices as they know Brits are avoiding Euroland. Most things were a smidge cheaper than the UK - but only just

Where did you go?! I found the people really nice (if a LITTLE pushy to get you in their bar/restaurant/shop), and the place generally very clean.

We went to Ortakent and I found the people to be smarmy and condescending and the general hygiene in the cafes etc was appalling and would never be permitted in this country, at least not by the HEO we had in Guildford.

BG as a commentator on football I have quite a lot of respect for you but that comment was just ignorant. You havent been here for more than twenty years (unless of course you have been this year... in which case you are either blind or just plain unlucky). When I first came here in 1985 the place was still in the fifties but there is no comparsion to what it is today. And as for comments about Turks..... you of all people should know the bad reputation that the english abroad have.... well theTurks who live abroad i.e. England have the same here. Would you like Turks to think that all English people are loud-mouthed, fat, bevested drunken louts who pıick a fight every five mins?

Don't think so.

Stick to what you know.

Sully Couldnt Shoot sorry if I offended you as it wasnt intended. You are right I havent been there for some years because I was put off the first time and perhaps shouldnt comment on what it may be like now. My point is that Turkey being cheap was the thing that sold it as a tourist area initially and if that is not the case now it will be more difficult to sell.

In fairness to Turkey when we went we had a 12 hour delay at LGW and as a result had to land at a military airfield which meant an 8 hour coach ride over the mountains. So leaving Epsom at 10am Friday we arrived at Ortakent (sp) at about 6pm Saturday so was well pissed off before we started our holiday. When we eventually got to the town everybody was trying to cajole us into going into their cafe/restaurant and I was not able to relax.

It is much the same in Cyprus but at least you could just say no thanks and carry on walking and not have somebody chase after you asking why you are not going in his cafe.

Perhaps in hindsight that gave me the wrong impression of Turkey, but it is a lasting one

The only problem I have with Turkey is Dalaman airport. Must be the most expensive in the world and does leave a nasty impression of the country which is a real shame.

I wont be going back to Turkey, i just didnt get my moneys worth(The hotel i might add was great, but the other stuff not so great) , gonna stick to south east asia from now on, its far away but worth it when u finally get there. If you find some where you absolutely love and then go to a country closer to home and are dissappointed it just makes you think those extra hours or cramped plane travelling are worth it in the end

Agree on the airports. £9 for a beer
