[Albion] Bobby Z is back!!

Yes they are a thing. Have always thought the Albion could do with a striker coach.

Can you coach instinct? Strikers have to make split second decisions to beat defenders, and keepers. They need support from other players which is positional sense, but nothing beats sniffing out an opportunity.

Great news to have both these quality players and top blokes back at the club. Was just thinking when I saw this that Liam will have more time for his media work too now and then read that he's got a gig as a media analyst for Sky. Not surprising as whenever he's been on TV he's been excellent and far better than some of the tired old faces with their tired old opinions. Reckon he'll go far in either coaching or TV work.

Him and BZ epitomise what this club is all about.

Good news but can’t help but think it’s a shame he’s not also back as a part-time coach for the strikers too.

Surely you'd want a full-time coach for the strikers. I know BZ has a lot of other interests – this role doesn't tie him to so many hours/days a week, so he is free to do his other stuff elsewhere?

Nice little earner, I would imagine – good for him, he's deserved it.

Not sure you can coach instinct although perhaps that improves for some with "reading the game" experience ( Murray? ) but players often talk about learning a lot from a good coach by practicing positional play & attacking set -pieces as well as focusing on how best to beat your defensive opponents.

I agree, you can't coach instinct, which was the purpose of my post. You've either got it or you haven't.

As someone pointed out on here I'm not sure he has his coaching badges but whether its Bobby Zamora or someone else, it would be interesting to learn what the Albion's thinking on this is.

I think we agree on the instinct thing. My point is that I still think there are other areas of forward play which you can practice and improve upon. Even the very best can improve with coaching and practice. Look at Ronaldo. World class in all aspects of attacking except heading, he transformed his heading ability to become one of the most lethal strikers with his head. That didn't happen by accident. He spent hundreds of hours practicing.

Indeed - and Gareth Southgate agrees with you. I remember reading this about England's specialist forwards coach during the World Cup:

Other than former players who are part of the Community Scheme, ex player and managers who are paid “ambassadors”, scouts etc my point is that the professional football bandwagon now extends from the parents of prospective 8 year old to retired old pros being paid to chat to the privilidged few who can afford corporate hospitalilty. Whilst the new money in the game is all very welcome, very little of it ends up benefiting the “sport”.
I have absolutely no problem with BZ continuing his association with the club - he deserves to but as Dwayne has posted, he doesn’t need the money. If professional football in now a ticket for life then perhaps they shouldn’t be paid quite so much - it is no longer a short career.

As the parent of a child involved with a category A youth academy I promise you there is no money coming my way, just lots of expense I have to pay and time spent leaving work early to drive him to training. It explicitly states in PL Academy rules no money is allowed to be involved with youth football.

I think a forwards coach would be a great idea. Not the same position, but you only have to look at what difference Ben Roberts has made to the keepers he's worked with. My point was about Bobby specifically. If – as I think he's said himself – he's not the biggest fan of football, then maybe he wouldn't be the right person for the job, even though he ability to find the back of the net would make him a great choice.

What's Michael Owen up to these days? :dunce: :jester:
