We didn't really have a nickname. We were known as Brighton.Occasionally the Albion but usually just Brighton with the occasional shout of "Up Hove!".

In those days nicknames tended to reflect the industry in the town were the club was. Luton = Hatters. Everton = Toffees. Northampton = Cobblers. etc.

Nobody would dream of calling their team afyer a flying rat.

That was the first match I remember seeing. Stood on a stool at the front of the East terrace down towards the South Stand. That was a brilliant goal and Charlie Baker ( our goalie ) ran to the half way line to join in the celebs. Marvellous scenes.

Burnley - early 1960s. One name springs to mind. Jimmy McIlroy. If he was playing today value him in tens of millions (at least)
Jack Bertolini scored in this game too - saw him at the Amex last season as a half time guest.

Some handbooks had us down as "the Shrimps",though in all my years I never heard us called this. We were "the Albion" as we still often are, with an emphasis on the "the".

And the 3-3 game was marvelous, and I understand many stood in the gardens on Goldstone Lane (the road along the back of the east terrace) to watch this, possibly including the notorious Napiers Kit Man who these days takes holiday IN THE FOOTBALL SEASON.

Hellfire.

My dad goes on and on and on about this being the best goal he has ever seen live. Was this the one where Mcnichol as full back pushed the ball into the Burnley half and just ran and smashed it in to the top corner without breaking stride?

Thats the one!

I love the fact that despite being only 32 and clearly never having a chance to see it I know it almost by osmosis from my old man.

In my head I liken it to a better version of Ian Chapman's belter against Bournemouth that was literally sucked into the North Stand goal by the fans. Now that was another great 3-3 draw, albeit against a much shitter team.
