More strikes planned on the underground - probably June 10th ish.

What a bunch of arseholes. They want a reduction in working hours to 32 a week!!!! And have rejected a 3% wage rise. Isn't that near enough inflation?

You'd think that with earning twice as much as a nurse and more than your average teacher they might think twice about disrupting everbody elses lives.

I hate the RMT. Scum. :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: I wish Thatcher had taken on a union that really does damage the country.

No surprises really. There are always strikes when Labour are in.

Get them to all re-apply for their jobs! I went to Uni for four years and my pay is crap! Do I strike?

Almost as dumb as these fuel protests being planned by haulage companies which that Howard gimp is thinking about endorsing.

So it's alright for oil companies to put prices up (which they have just done) but not for the government? ???

I see. Much better for price increases to go into the pockets of private companies. :nono:

I'm sure the Saudi Arabians will have to reconsider their position at this week's Opec meeting if a dozen sleep-deprived socially-inadequate Yorkie-munching fat blokes in checked shirts decide NOT fall asleep at the wheel for a few days.

Fucks sake - what a bunch of union-hating eejits you lot are. Good luck to Crow and his merry men. If you want to have a go at excessive salaries, there's a whole City of London full of tossers who earn millions just by gambling, scratching their arses and going to the right public school. No, you choose instead to protect the fat cats and have a pop at the guys who drive the trains - the same people who've compaigned for years against rail privatisation and for more investment in our crumbling rail infrastructure. The fact that the train drivers have a strong union will ensure they are never taken advantage of like the nurses. The RCN not striking has done them a FAT lot of good, hasn't it?

I'm all for strong unions but not if they take the piss, and a 32 hour week is taking the piss and so are wage demands of above inflation for an already well paid job (tube drivers - 30k I believe)

Well, I beg to differ. I want our train drivers to be well paid. They do a responsible job and have our lives in their hands. 32 hours is fair enough by me if it keeps them concentrating to the max. No one should be working longer than a 35-hour week anyway, whatever job you do. People like the firefighters, train drivers, pilots, the cops should work less because of the stress and responsibility they have.

The day when traindriving turns into the equivalent of a burger-flipping job with long hours, shit pay and weak or no unions, well, then that's the day you might end up having something really important to moan about.

It IS taking the piss when a lot of people I know (myself included) work 38 hours+ a week, have not had pay rises for 2 years. I am an ex-teacher and an Union Rep. I agree with industrial action, but why do all these services that know the public will get hacked off if they withdraw there labour, resort to this means as a first step. Firefighters go on strike people can die, Police can't go on strike, teachers go on strike kids education suffers, Nurses go on strike (see firefighters), RMT go on strike, London goes into meltdown....

Have these Union leaders not worked out there are loads of effective forms of industrial action that can go almost unnoticed outside, but its is easier for THEM to get a result if they make us suffer !!! :censored:  :censored:

Hmm. I've got mixed feelings. I agree with London Irish to a certain extent but I would stop short of describing Bob Crowe as a 'Working Class Hero'. People like Ben Tillett and Annie Beasant were working class heroes as they campaigned against and in the face of real hardship. Crow on the other hand is a fat capitalist who has something that people want (his members labour) and is determined to get as much as he can for it. He's not striking for the general good or working class people but for his own selfish interest. He is, and I mean this in the truest sense of the word, a Fascist.

On a train...
Don't forget RMT members have also voted to strike on the national railways.

All signalman who are members of the RMT will be on strike. The railway will come to a grinding halt.

Funnily enough i came out of the RMT a couple of months back basically for some of reasons stated above. The Union Policy these days has become, i my view, warped and they are no longer looking at the big picture only the short-term gain for the members.

When i first joined the Underground 7 years ago the RMT was a strong union, who used the need to strike as a last resort against a Management that was trying to bully in all sorts of horrendous working conditions and pay rises which plenty of strings attached. The RMT did well for the members and showed the weak Management of the time that we wouldn't be bulldozed over, but unfortunately ever since Crow took over he has done plenty to damage the public face of the RMT. The straw that broke the camels back for me was over the past several months two cases have come to light. The Metronet staff who got caught with a fair few empty beer cans stuffed away and were rightly dealt with. The second was the striking over the Driver who played Squash whilst on the sick through a damaged ankle. It's just becoming petty tit for tat with striking now becoming the prevailent means of achieveing what they want rather than the last resort.

Saying that the RMT helped me alot. I was assaulted on duty, had a fire extinguisher set off in my face, but the Managers decided it was an accident because i never saw the assailants who did it. Tried to dock my wages and enter a unattendance slip into my file. I was caught in New York when the towers were hit and couldn't get home for a week. The Managers knew all about it and that i would be late returning to work, yet still tried to dock my holiday and wages and enter me onto the disciplinary ladder for unattendance due to company policy. That's the mentality they we have to deal with on the Underground and it gets on ppls wicks.

So there's two sides to every story. I've appreciated what they did for me at a local level of union involvement, but at national level i think they have come off the rails somewhat.

But you're all forgetting - the poor downtrodden tube drivers only get eight weeks' holiday. Now lay off them.

Is that the drivers fault? Out of the 52 weeks a year i doubt very much most underground staff who do shift work have more than a quarter of weekends off and start work at either 4.30am or finish at 2am. Hence why i don't have a season ticket.

Just because they have several good aspects to their working conditions, doesn't mean its all a bed of roses. Also if ppl are that concerned that drivers get £30k a year, 8 weeks holiday, free travel, then why not take the job up yourselves, they are always recruiting?

And just for the record i'm not a driver.

Too far from the sun
Clowns like Crow use their members as connon-fodder for their personal battles with the government of the day. The RMT strike has less to do with upping drivers' already considerable salaries and more to do with boosting their own ego.

London Irish - phrases like 'working class hero' are exactly what pseudo-Communists like Crow want to hear (he earns considerably more than £30K by the way, and he won't lose a penny when the RMT go on strike). The only sort of equality he's interested in is where he's more equal than anyone else.

All the time he's getting his ego stroked Crow will continue to make both commuters and his members worse off. If the strike REALLY was about poor pay and conditions I would back it, but it ain't so.
