Why is most of Europe not safe for those fleeing surely once they are out of the war zone and in a safe haven the need to continue to flee stops and therefore there is no requirement to even think about crossing the channel

You are right. What the French should be doing is asking those in Calais whether they want to claim asylum in France, since as you are say they are in a safe country. If they don't want to claim asylum in France, then the French should be returning them to their own countries not allowing them to set up camp there in the hope of coming here.

What were the people from Albania going through that were on the boat ? I am not up to date with the situation there.

Not a clue apart from its overrun with Syrian refugees, but i would think every parent would want the best for his child , if they think its worth risking that childs life in search of a better life then the situation they are in must be pretty grim , i dont really think it matters what nationality these people are , only that they are risking their lives doing it .

Surprised it doesn't appear to have organised as Route One from Northern France to the UK long before now to be honest. Short but busily dangerous stretch of water, make it safely halfway across and you're home and dry as it were. Certainly beats rotting in Calais forever.

Sorry that is nonsense, it completely matters as to what nationality they are.

While some are genuine refugees from war zones such as Syria and Libya many are economic migrants from places like Albania and North Africa etc..

And has already been pointed out, once they are in Western Europe what is stopping them registering as refugees there?

It seems to be the case that people on NSC are imagining that the refugees reached France direct from Albania and that they therefore should be returned direct to Albania. But how does anyone without an air ticket get direct from Albania to France?

The same applies to the journey that these refugees have made to the UK.

Or erect giant screens the length of the South Coast's beaches showing a montage of people in Palace shirts, typical daily scenes in the housing estates of Middlesbrough and Grimsby and a repeat scene of Miranda falling over, all backed by a Coldplay track. The words "Welcome to England!" on top of them in bright lights. Calais will be overrun in days.

Out of interest- genuine question, I haven't studied this in any great depth- if we did leave, would the laws suddenly change to allow the authorities at national and local level to refuse state aid to the sort of people you mention (perhaps not Albanians & Turkish people as they wouldn't have been in the EU prior to us leaving, but, for example, Romanians, Bulgarians etc)? Is that likely? I'd guess not.

Whenever I can I always give to the RNLI, however I will stop giving if it turns out to be the case that they start picking people up. This is an EU problem, so therefore this should paid for by the EU.

Secondly we will see a lot more of this now, because soon as they get half way across they are then in UK waters, they will be picked up by us and will claim Asylum in the UK, even though they should have claimed Asylum in the first country they arrived in.
