Those ideal weights are if you want to look like a pre pubescent boy. I'm about 1.5-2 stone over my BMI but have no more than 15% body fat and a reasonable amount of muscle so for me its crap.

How ripped is Doctor Christian!? Only 7% fat too - he must live in the gym.

Yeah it's crap

I'm 5 11, weigh 15.6 stone as of this morning, although it may be lower as I have just taken an epic shit

But I hit the weights and jog alot!! BMI. Can go f*** itself

I agree with you, given that you are my identical body double (well, same height and weight). I hit the weights 3/4 times a week and do lots of running and play rugby, so I'm not too worried. In fact, since I have started hitting the gym more regularly, I have lost 2 inches off my waist (and I wasn't fat before) and put on half a stone.

This has come up before.

The must reliable way to assess if someone is over/under weight is to look at them in their scanties and if your reaction is to call then a fat f they are overweight. If your reaction is to force them to eat a sandwich they are underweight.
The same test but with clothes on then they are 'very', same test but from a distance down the road 'severely'.

After watching embarassing fat bodies last night on Channel 4 I decided to check my BMI, now I'm no slim jim but I'm a fairly rotund fella, anyways I'm 6ft 1 and 15 and a half stone and after inputting this info in on the embarassing bodies website it says I'm obese!! And that my ideal weight should be 11 stone!!! I'm naturally big boned and canst believe that I would ever get to this weight! Is it me or is the BMI just a bit far fetched?

so its saying most 6ft 1 people should weigh 11 stone. yes total shit! most 6 ft + people i know (and even the non fat ones) start at at least 12 to 12.5 stone. and they're also people who dont have a load of muscle. just normal 6ft + slim people.

I agree I've got a bit of a belly, nothing to suggest I'm a massive fatty boom boom though, no bigger than say the actor Vince Vaughn! And I do alot of gym work on my arms so have alright guns! Guess I need to swap the weights for the treadmill lol ;)

no no. carry on with weights. just stop doing only arm curls. do some chest, back and LEGS! then add cardio once you've got a good gym routine with the weights going. always weights as a foundation. otherwise you'll turn into a skinny fat mess lol. diet is the main thing to focus on though. just start eating a little less calories than you need to maintain weight.

Ha - you get them everywhere! I'm an exile and a cheapskate, so it is PureGym for me (£10.99 a month for 24 hour a day gym!). Genuinely the best thing I have done for my finances - whilst I am gymming I'm not out spending money!

I would love to go to that gym if I lived nearer, but with Virgin, it's on the way home and I can have a swim

No it doesn't. BMI gives a normal RANGE, not a specific "must be 11 stone" prescription. 12-12.5 stone is normal for that height. 15 stone isn't.

yea i see. 6 ft+ and 11 stone? thats an eating disorder surely! 6ft + and 15 stone could just be a rugby player for example. much more normal.

Not quite. BMI suggests 10.5-13 stone as being normal for someone 6'1" tall. As already stated this does not take into account individual differences in muscle mass, but is a good general indication. Also, you should remember that obesity is also an eating disorder!

Complete bollocks as a single measurement. Look at pro rugby players etc. who are anything but 'obese'.

Has to be said though that in conjunction with other measurements and some common sense it can be a tool to give part of the over-all picture.

P.S. I'm a part time gym instructor

11st at your height is a bit too trim. More realistically, you should be about 13.5 stone.

It's not Bollocks. It's "Body" mass index.
