Poyet Here to Stay

Albion chairman Tony Bloom has issued a hands-off warning to Portsmouth, after media speculation linked them with a move for Gus Poyet.

Poyet, speaking from South America says he is not interested, and dismissed the reports linking him with the FA Cup Finalists as "total speculation".

Bloom, who has ploughed a £100m chunk of his personal fortune into the club to finance the new stadium, said, "Gus is here on a long-term brief. He has signed up for the future and we are close to agreeing a new four-year contract for him and Mauricio with the club.

"The new stadium is only a year away: we want Gus to take us there, and he wants to lead us into our new home at Falmer.

"He has done a very good job since coming here as manager in November, and I can understand other clubs being interested in his services, but as far as I am concerned he is not available.

"I want Gus to be here at the Albion for a very long time. I feel he will be a top manager, and manage at the very top level - but I want him to do that with Brighton & Hove Albion."

Poyet is currently away in South America, but on Saturday he pledged his future to Albion. Today he reiterated, "I'm very happy here at Brighton.

"There is a big future for the club. We have a great chance to fight for promotion next season so I would not want to go anywhere else. I would have to start from scratch again and that is not the right way to do it.

"I can only imagine someone has linked my name to Portsmouth so they can get a great story in the week before their Cup Final appearance against Chelsea!"

Don't know why there is such a fuss about this to be honest, and certainly not why Bloom is coming out and making statements. Quite simply, Gus would not leave us for anyone but a top-half premiership club at this stage in his career. It would be pointless as if it went wrong he could end up damaged goods for life. He knows that, we know that. Then, on the other hand, no top-half premiership club is going to look at him until he's actually achieved something with us, which can't be until at least half way through next season at the earliest.

Relax.

Blimey, never thought I'd say this but. I AGREE.

Oh actually I think we agree on Lewis being KING as well.

Just filed the following to The Times and Times Online (which is still free - get it while you can!) Probably won't be used until tomorrow though.

Gustavo Poyet, the manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, has distanced himself from reports that he could succeed Avram Grant if the Portsmouth manager leaves Fratton Park after tomorrow’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Poyet and Maurizio Taricco, his assistant, are in the process of agreeing a new four-year contract with the League One club, which will allow them to take charge of the team’s first match in the new 23,000-seat stadium presently taking shape at Falmer and which is due to open at the start of the 2011-12 season.

“My idea is clear,” he told The Times yesterday. “I’m negotiating a new contract and I’m looking forward to concluding an agreement. I said I wanted to lead the team out for the first match at the new stadium and I don’t want to change that.

“I think it’s a good situation for me to become a better manager, I’ve been able to get the team playing and believing in my way, which is important to me and I don’t want to start all over again. So now my job is to find a few extra players to push for promotion next year.”

The former Chelsea, Tottenham and Uruguay midfield player led the team away from the relgation zone after taking over from Russell Slade in November. Tony Bloom, the chairman, expects a strong promotion challenge next season in the hope that the club will open the 2011-12 season in a higher division as well as in the eye-opening stadium that he has financed with an estimated £100 of his considerable personal fortune.

Life at Fratton Park next season, albeit in the npower Championship, seems fraught with uncertainty by comparison, with few players remaining under contract and the possibility of a further points deduction.

“It’s difficult to talk about the Portsmouth situation when you are not involved, because it’s quite unclear, but we know that we are in a very strong situation at Brighton and that’s the main point right now,” Poyet said. “We accept that, because we’ve done very well over the past four or five months, that some possibilities will open up, but that’s football. It happened to me as a player and an assistant, and it’s going to happen as a manager.”

Blimey! A sneaky peak article from our man at The Times.

Cheers, Nick....and you are indeed.....NOT Andy Naylor!!

I'm afraid it's silly season until the new one starts. Expect 12,041 newspaper stories linking almost every player and manager in England with every club in the land. 99% of them are nothing but pure bullshit to sell papers.

coupled with the fact that some NSC'ers are speculating that Gus is away on a scouting mission .

Relax.

Not that one would even have him on their longlist, let alone shortlist.

I disagree, if someone like Reading or Southampton came in for him, I think we'd struggle to hang onto him, anyway it's good to see you so positive for a change :lolol:
