Rio Ferdinand announced yesterday that his eldest son, Lorenz, had moved out to go to Brighton’s goalkeeper academy.
Much has been written recently on how Brighton and Hove Albion is the best-run club in the Premier League – but the data-driven stewardship of gambling legend Tony Bloom runs even deeper than the current headlines suggest.
Bloom spotted that there weren’t many English goalkeepers coming through into the league (it can be an unfashionable position with less star quality and lower transfer fees) so he saw an opportunity. By hoovering up all the good teenage goalkeeping prospects he could and putting them through the academy, he would have a conveyor belt of up-and-coming keepers to fill much needed squad roles across the English league. Making Brighton a tidy profit each time.

Lorenz has been with the club for a while, but now he's 16 I'm guessing hes moving down here to join our academy system full time.
Yep Rio was often around Shoreham having coffee etc while his lad trained

Just sounds like Rio got bored of driving him down all the time for training. Lorenz has been with the club for ages.

The Daily Mail- reporting this story- breathlessly documented it as "Rio's son leaves home to live with another family" as though there had been some sort of awful, tragic falling out, rather than a budding footballer going to live with a host family as happens with countless young lads all over the country every season, with the full support of their parents.

No idea. But damned good at shot-stopping and commanding his penalty area.

So, probably League1 at best then .......................................
Yep. That hasn’t been good enough on its own since about 2010.

No, Lorenze has been brought down by Club transport (on the odd occasion Rio would do it) until now. I think this is what the club do once they see a real future for a youngster. Get the player into digs so he is free of long days travelling and can concentrate on his career. The club do continue to monitor and help with formal education too. I don't know of any other Academy that provides such a good transport system for the younger players just starting out. This is a special club.
